The Paul Finebaum Radio Network, syndicated with affiliates across the southeast, was created in 2001 by Finebaum, Network Director Pat Smith, and Producer Kerry Adams. It was designated one of the top 12 sports radio shows in the United States by Sports Illustrated in 2004. His radio show was relocated to WJOX in January 2007.
Finebaum became entangled in one of the greatest college sports scandals in America in 2011: the poisoning of Auburn University’s iconic trees on Toomer’s Corner. Harvey Updyke, the guy accused, contacted the Finebaum program and claimed to have poisoned the trees. The call’s audio was broadcast on practically every national radio show and television program throughout the country. Finebaum was featured on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, as well as CNN, ESPN, MSNBC, and other networks in the aftermath.
Updyke appeared on the Finebaum program on April 21, breaking his lengthy quiet, and spoke publicly for the first time since the tragedy. Finebaum has made significant contributions to television. He presently works as a sports analyst for WBRC in Birmingham. From 1998 to 2002, he worked as the sports director for WIAT-TV and co-hosted shows on WVTM-TV and WBMA. Finebaum also appeared in the ESPN documentary Roll Tide/War Eagle, in which he played a key part. The documentary’s voice was provided by Finebaum and his show, which premiered on November 8, 2011.
Finebaum committed to participate on ESPN’s new SEC Network starting in 2014, hosting The Paul Finebaum Show in simulcast for ESPN Radio, as part of an agreement inked in May 2013. Finebaum has presented special broadcasts on SEC Network as part of ESPN Megacasts involving SEC teams—the Finebaum Film Room—as an extension of his radio show, notably during College Football Playoff National Championship games.
