G. Robert “Bob” Sheetz formed Sheetz, Inc. in 1952 when he bought one of his father’s five dairy establishments in Altoona. Bob hired his brother Steve to work part-time in 1961. The second store, known as “Sheetz Kwik Shopper,” opened in 1963. In 1968, a third location opened. Steve was promoted to general manager in 1969. The brothers planned to open a new store every year.

Sheetz announced an expansion into Columbus, Ohio, beginning in 2021 on November 29, 2019.  Speedway, Circle K, GetGo, United Dairy Farmers, and the locally based Duchess Shoppe are currently the key rivals in that area. According to Sheetz COO Travis Sheetz, the company wants to open 60 stores in the Columbus area by 2025, more than tripling its existing shop count in Ohio.

In January 2021, Sheetz launched a website, SheetzIsComing.com, to prepare for its Columbus launch, with accompanying digital billboards to hype its arrival.Another location was planned in Worthington but was shelved due to local resident opposition to the proposed site being next door to a water treatment plant. Sheetz’s formal arrival in the area coincided with the inauguration of the store.

Earl Springer, the manager of a Sheetz in Williamsport, MD, developed a meal concept that would become Sheetz’s famous Made To Order (MTO) line in 1986 to stimulate lagging sales. [20] Customers would write down a small sheet of paper with the items they desired on their sandwich and in what quantities, starting with solely submarine sandwiches.  The order form would be stuffed into a bag.

Sheetz was selling 10,000 MTO units per day by 1999. Sheetz is now training staff to work as baristas for its new “Sheetz Bros. Coffeez” brand, which is supposed to be higher-quality coffee than what is generally offered at convenience stores. They have broadened their menu with the launch of the “Convenience Restaurant” concept. Customers can choose from a wide range of meal options.
