Starbucks, as the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, is widely regarded as the face of America’s third wave of coffee culture. Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker launched the company in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1971, and it is now headquartered in the Starbucks Center. They sold the company to Howard Schultz in the early 1980s, who chose to turn the coffee bean store into a coffeeshop serving espresso-based drinks during a business trip to Milan, Italy. From 1986 through 1990, Schultz served as CEO for the first time.

With the introduction of soy milk in 1997, Starbucks became the first company in the United States to provide non-dairy milk. Starbucks ceased using milk from cows treated with rBGH in 2007. The company started selling salads and baked items without high fructose corn syrup or artificial additives in June 2009. This move was supposed to attract health-conscious and budget-conscious customers, as well as lower pricing.
