The YMCA, sometimes known as the Y, is a global youth organisation located in Geneva, Switzerland, with over 64 million members in 120 countries. Sir George Williams created the Young Men’s Christian Association in London on June 6, 1844, with the goal of putting Christian teachings into reality by cultivating a healthy “body, mind, and soul.” Since its inception,
George Williams and 11 friends formed the YMCA. George Williams was a draper in London, and he was typical of the young men who were lured to cities by the Industrial Revolution. They were concerned about the absence of healthful activities for young men in larger cities, with pubs and brothels frequently being the only possibilities. Williams’ concept arose from prayer and Bible-reading gatherings he hosted.

By later that year, there were YMCAs in the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States, as well as Hong Kong, thanks in part to the use of the Great Exhibition of 1851 to propagate the idea of the YMCA.Henry Dunant, Secretary of the YMCA Geneva, was the driving force behind the creation of a really global movement with an international headquarters.
Between the 1870s and the 1930s, the YMCA was extremely popular, teaching “evangelical Christianity in weekday and Sunday services, as well as good sportsmanship in athletic contests in gyms (where basketball and volleyball were invented) and swimming pools.” YMCA had “became interdenominatio” later in this period, and continued into the twentieth century.
YMCA had erected no less than 250 leisure centres, commonly known as huts, in the United Kingdom within ten days of the declaration of World War I, and would go on to create temporary huts across Europe to help both troops and civilians, all of which were maintained by thousands of volunteers. Clementine Churchill(for which she was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire) was a notable supporter and volunteer.
George A. Sanford and Sumner F. Dudley, both YMCA employees, founded Camp Baldhead (later known as Camp Dudley) in 1885, the first residential camp in the United States and North America. The camp was originally located near Orange Lake in New Jersey, but moved the next year to Lake Wawayanda in Sussex County, and later to the shore of Lake Champlain in Westport, New York.
