The Bank of America Corporation (often abbreviated as BofA or BoA) is an American global investment bank and financial services holding company with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bank of America was founded in San Francisco in 1998 as a result of NationsBank’s acquisition of BankAmerica. It is the Uni’s second-largest banking institution.

Giannini pioneered branch banking in California quickly after legislation was passed in 1909 allowing for it, opening the bank’s first branch outside of San Francisco in San Jose in 1909. The bank operated 453 banking offices in California by 1929, with total assets of about US $1.4 billion. In San Jose’s History Park, there’s a reproduction of the 1909 Bank of Italy branch bank, as well as a replica of the 1909 Bank of Italy branch bank.

From a name standpoint, Bank of America’s history stretches back to October 17, 1904, when Amadeo Pietro Giannini established the Bank of Italy in San Francisco.  Bank of America, Los Angeles was founded in 1922, with Giannini as a minority shareholder. In 1928, the two banks combined and consolidated with other bank interests to form the country’s largest banking institution.

Following the enactment of the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, BankAmerica Corporation was formed to own and operate Bank of America and its subsidiaries 1983, Bank of America expanded outside of California with the acquisition of Seafirst Corporation of Seattle, Washington, and its wholly-owned banking subsidiary, which was organized in part by Stephen McLin.
