United Parcel Service (UPS, stylized as ups) is a worldwide shipping and receiving and supply chain management corporation headquartered in the United States. It was formed in 1907. UPS began as the American Messenger Firm, a telegraph company, and has since grown to become a Fortune 500 company and one of the world’s largest transportation carriers. Today, UPS is best known for its ground shipment services, but it also offers other services.
James Casey and Claude Ryan formed the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington, on August 28, 1907, with a $100 debt. The majority of deliveries were made on foot at the time, with bicycles being employed for larger excursions. The American Messenger Company specialised in package delivery to retail stores, as well as special delivery mail for its main client, the United States Postal Service.

In the United States, major rivals include the United States Postal Service (USPS) and FedEx, as well as regional carriers like OnTrac and LSO (formerly Lonestar Overnight). UPS developed methods to improve efficiency in the 1990s in order to handle the increasing amount of clients. Every UPS driver uses a handheld device called the “Delivery Information Acquisition Device” (DIAD) to record and upload delivery information to the UPS network as soon as it is picked up. UPS started tracking all ground shipments electronically in 1992. UPS was founded in 1994.
UPS stated on January 29, 2020, that it would invest in UK start-up Arrival and order 10,000 Generation 2 electric vehicles as part of its transition to a cleaner, more high-tech fleet. The contract, which spans from 2020 to 2024, is said to be valued at more than $400 million. Carol Tomé will succeed David Abney as the company’s chief executive officer in March 2020. It was seen as a bold move.
