Citibank is the consumer division of Citigroup, a financial services conglomerate. Citibank began as the City Bank of New York in 1812 and eventually changed its name to First National City Bank of New York. The bank has a total of 2,649 branches in 19 countries, including 723 in the United States and 1,494 in Mexico, which are operated through its subsidiary Banamex. The branches in the United States are coordinated.
The bank entered the credit card market in the 1960s. First National City Bank purchased Carte Blanche from Hilton Hotels in 1965. Under pressure from the US government, the bank sold this division three years later. By 1968, the business had developed its own credit card. The “Everything Card,” as it was dubbed, was marketed as an East Coast equivalent of the BankAmericard. By 1969, the First World War had ended.

In 1981, the Narre Warren-Caroline Springs[dubious – discuss] credit card company was purchased as the bank’s expansion continued.
