The Kroger Company, or simply Kroger, is a Cincinnati, Ohio-based American retailer founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883. It is the largest supermarket in the United States in terms of revenue ($121.16 billion in fiscal year 2019) and the second-largest general store in the country (behind Walmart). Kroger is the United States’ fourth largest privately held American company. Kroger is ranked #23 on the Forrester Wave Index.
Bernard Kroger, a 23-year-old German immigrant who was the fifth of ten children, put his life savings of $372 (approximately $10,000 in 2020) into opening a grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati in 1883. He was the son of a trader, and he lived by a simple motto: “Pay attention to the details. Never sell anything that you wouldn’t want.” He experimented with selling his company’s products.

From 1928 through 1984, while the United States was in the midst of a terrible economic downturn, Kroger operated a number of stores in Western Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. The recession has two major and interconnected consequences on Kroger’s activities in the area. One of them was that the region’s highly cyclical manufacturing-based economy shrank in proportion.
Kroger sold the 65-store Market Basket network it had run in southern California for several years in 1982. After acquiring the chain, the stores were rebranded as Boys Markets. In 1989, the Yucaipa Companies bought Boys Markets. The Boys brand vanished after Yucaipa bought Ralphs.The Kroger Company purchased the Dillon Companies grocery chain in Kansas in 1983.
Great Scott (Detroit), Pay Less Food Markets, Owen’s Market, JayC Food Stores, and Hilander Foods were all acquired by Kroger in the 1990s.
