During the 1960s, Ernie Talley of Mr. T’s Rental in Wichita, Kansas, established the rent-to-own company by telling clients that they had rented a washer and dryer for long enough that they had paid for it in full and now owned it.  Former Mr. T’s rental employee Thomas Devlin saw the possibility of renting name-brand products and joined with W. Frank.

In 1995, Renters Choice was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol “RCII.”  Renters Choice purchased Thorn Americas, Inc. in August 1998, which operated 1,474 outlets under the name “Rent-A-Center” in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Renters Choice changed its name to Rent-A-Center, Inc. on December 31, 1998, and began operating all of its locations under the “Rent-A-Center” brand.
