They were founded in 1946 and were initially known as the Syracuse Nationals

Danny Biasone, an Italian immigrant, delivered a $5,000 check to the National Basketball League offices in Chicago in 1946, and the Syracuse Nationals, situated in the Upstate New York city of Syracuse, became the league’s easternmost franchise. [8] In the same year that professional basketball was finally getting some legitimacy with the rival Basketball Association of America, the Syracuse Nationals joined the NBL.
The Nationals were an immediate success in the NBA, winning the Eastern Division with a league-best 51–13 record in 1949–50. The Nationals continued to play well in the playoffs, winning two games in a row against the Philadelphia Warriors. The Nationals advanced to the Eastern Finals, where they faced the New York Knickerbockers, defeating them in a three-game series. During the NBA Finals,
During the 1954–55 NBA season, when the league was struggling financially and only had eight teams, Biasone proposed that the league reduce the length of time it took for a shot, thus speeding up a game that often concluded with teams simply holding the ball and playing keep away. A 24-second shot clock, according to Biasone and Nationals general manager Ferris, would allow at least 30 shots to be taken.

The Syracuse Nationals’ playoff overtime loss on March 26, 1963, would be their final game, as investors Irv Kosloff and Ike Richman bought the team from Danny Biasone and relocated it to Philadelphia, filling the hole left by the Warriors. Syracuse was the last of the medium-sized cities to host an NBA team, although it was clear by then that central New York was no longer large enough to support one.

In the 1972–73 season, the bottom fell out. Cunningham’s departure to the ABA effectively terminated the season, leaving the Sixers with a roster of Greer and little else. The 76ers lost their first 15 games of the season, then set a then-record 20-game losing streak a few months later. Following the 20-game losing run, they had a 4–58 record, and the team at the time had a 4–58 record.
