Columbia bought Alfred H. Grebe’s Atlantic Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) $410,000 for the small Brooklyn station WABC (no related to the current WABC), which would become the network’s flagship station, during Louchheim’s brief reign. WABC was renovated swiftly, and the signal was moved to 860 kHz. The physical plant was also relocated to Manhattan’s Steinway Hall on West 57th Street.
Paley’s efforts to develop affiliate relations contributed significantly to the growth. At the time, there were two types of programmes: sponsored and sustained, or unsponsored. NBC, a competitor, compensated affiliates for every sponsored show they broadcast and charged them for every sustaining show. It was difficult for small and medium-sized stations, and it resulted in disgruntled affiliates and limitations.
Because NBC was the broadcast arm of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), its CEO David Sarnoff approached his decisions as both a broadcaster and a hardware executive; NBC’s affiliates all had the most up-to-date RCA broadcasting equipment and were frequently the best-established stations or were on “clear channel” frequencies. Sarnoff’s associates, on the other hand, were wary of him. Paley didn’t have a split .
