Anthony Frank Iommi is a British guitarist, songwriter, and producer who was born on February 19, 1948. He was the main guitarist, co-founder, and leader of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, as well as the band’s principal composer and longest-serving member. In Rolling Stone magazine’s ranking of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Iommi was voted number 25.

Iommi lost the tips of his middle and ring fingers on his right hand in an accident while working in a factory as a youngster, an occurrence that had a significant impact on his playing style. He created Heaven & Hell after the release of Fused, but the band disintegrated after Ronnie James Dio’s death in 2010.
Sylvia Maria (née Valenti, born in Palermo) Iommi and Anthony Frank Iommi had an only child, Anthony Frank Iommi, who was born in Birmingham. In Italy, Sylvia’s family owned vineyards.
The family was Catholic, but they didn’t go to Mass too often. Their family home in Aston’s Park Lane neighbourhood also held a shop that was a popular gathering spot for the community, with the living room serving as the stockroom. His mother ran the shop, and his father worked as a carpenter.

Iommi slipped and wounded his top lip when he was 8 or 9 years old while being chased by another boy.As a result, he earned the moniker “Scarface,” which made him more self-conscious about the scar, prompting him to grow his signature moustache to conceal it.

Iommi began working out at the age of ten, learning judo, karate, and eventually boxing in order to protect himself from the local gangs that concentrated in his neighbourhood. He envisioned himself becoming a nightclub bouncer in the future.Iommi intended to play the drums as a child, but due to the overwhelming noise, he switched to the guitar as a teenager, influenced by Hank Marvin and the Shadows.

He’s always played guitar with his left hand. After graduating from high school, Iommi worked as a plumber for a short time before moving on to a factory that made rings. He claimed that he used to work in a music store, but that he left after being unfairly accused of theft.

Tony Iommi Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

On his last day of work in a sheet metal industry, Iommi lost the tips of his right middle and ring fingers in an industrial accident when he was 17 years old. Iommi explained how he did it “‘You’ll never play again,’ he was informed. It was very incredible. I sat in the hospital, my hand in this bag, thinking, “That’s it, I’m done.” Eventually, though, I decided, “I’m not going to accept it.” I’m sure there’s a way for me to participate.’” Following his injuries, Iommi’s factory foreman played him a CD of legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, which inspired him to pursue a career as a musician. Later, Iommi wrote:

He then wrapped them with an old leather jacket’s fabric. The last thing I want to do right now is listen to someone play the guitar!” But he persisted, and he eventually played the record for me. ‘You know, the guy’s only playing with two fingers on his fretboard hand due of an injury he sustained in a terrible fire,’ he explained after I told him I thought it was incredibly wonderful. This revelation completely stunned me, and I was so inspired by what I had just heard that I immediately began trying to play again.”Iommi was inspired by Reinhardt’s two-finger guitar playing and decided to pick up the guitar again, despite the fact that his ailment made it difficult.Iommi never seriously explored swapping hands and learning to play right-handed, despite the fact that it was an option.

Iommi’s response was as follows:I would have switched if I had known what I know now. I had been playing for two or three years at the time, and it seemed like I had been playing for a long time. I felt I’d never be able to alter my style of play. The reality was that I hadn’t been playing for very long, and I could have spent the same amount of time learning to play right handed instead. I gave it a shot, but I didn’t have the patience for it. To me, it seemed inconceivable. I decided to make do with what I had and created my own plastic fingertips. I just kept going with it.

He eventually decided to continue playing with his left hand.he cut sections from a leather jacket to cover his new homemade prosthetic, which posed two technical challenges. First, the thimbles stopped him from feeling the strings, leading to a proclivity to slam them down hard. Second, he had trouble bending strings, so he looked for light-gauge guitar strings to help him out. However, Iommi says that such strings were not available at the time, so he substituted banjo strings until Picato Strings began producing light-gauge guitar strings around 1970–71.

Furthermore, he primarily utilised the afflicted fingers to fret chords rather than play single-note solos. The thimbles “helped with his technique,” Iommi told Guitar Player magazine in 1974, because he had to utilise his little finger more than he had before the injury. Later on, he started tuning his guitar to lower pitches, sometimes up to three semitones below conventional tuning (e.g., on “Children of the Grave”, “Lord of this World” Although Iommi claims that the main goal was to provide a “bigger, heavier tone,” slackening the strings makes them simpler to bend.

His workplace accident had an impact on Black Sabbath’s sound; by 1971’s Master of Reality album, Iommi had detuned his guitar, lowering string tension and relieving discomfort in his fingertips. To match Iommi, Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler did the same. Sabbath was one of the first bands to use detuning, and it became a staple of heavy metal music. With the use of power chords, a modified treble-boosting effect pedal, and a Gibson SG, Iommi mixed blues-like guitar solos and gloomy, minor-key riffing with a new high-gain, extremely distorted tone. Black Sabbath were struggling from substance addiction, management issues, and touring tiredness by the late 1970s. Furthermore, in comparison to the new generation of metal bands such as Judas Priest and Motörhead, the band’s sluggish, blues-driven riffs were considered as antiquated by some. After the critically acclaimed albums Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die!Black Sabbath collaborated with Dio on Heaven and Hell, an album that aimed to modernise Black Sabbath’s sound for the 1980s while also incorporating the soaring vocals that definedBill Ward left the band halfway through the 1980 tour owing to alcoholism and dissatisfaction with the direction Dio was heading the band. Vinny Appice took his place. This lineup produced Mob Rules, with Iommi and Geezer Butler as the only original members. After Dio left the band the following year to pursue a solo career, Sabbath went through a series of frontmen over the next decade, including Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen, and Tony Martin. Geezer Butler left the band in 1984 after Ian Gillan (previously of Deep Purple) left. Iommi recorded his first solo album, Seventh Star, while Sabbath was effectively on hiatus. The album included Glenn Hughes (also formerly of Deep Purple) on vocals, although it was marketed as a release by “Black Sabbath starring Tony Iommi” due to label demands. Iommi performed four songs alongside the other members of Queen and other guest musicians during the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992.

In the same year, Geezer Butler returned to Sabbath. The next year, Iommi collaborated with fellow Black Country band Diamond Head on the song “Starcrossed (Lovers in the Night)” for their Death and Progress album, which was released in 1993. In 1992, Dio refused to play at Osbourne’s “farewell” concert in Costa Mesa and abruptly left the band. As a result, Rob Halford was enlisted to fill in for Ozzy Osbourne on two occasions (Halford also sang at one of the 2004 Ozzfest dates when Osbourne was unable to perform due to bronchitis). Following Osbourne’s solo set, the show finished with a four-song reunion featuring the rest of the original Black Sabbath lineup. Before the original line-up reassembled as a touring band in 1997, Black Sabbath recorded two more albums with Tony Martin. Bill Ward performed at the two initial reunion gigs at Birmingham NEC in December 1997, however he was absent for the following two reunion tours due to a heart attack, his second absence. Mike Bordin and eventually Vinny Appice took Ward’s place. On November 11, 2011, the original members of the band announced that they were reuniting and recording a new album, albeit Bill Ward was absent from the sessions and Brad Wilk took his place at the drums. In June 2013, the new album 13, was released. Iommi released his first genuine solo album, Iommi, in 2000. Ian Astbury, Skin, Henry Rollins, Serj Tankian, Dave Grohl, Billy Corgan, Phil Anselmo, Peter Steele, and Ozzy Osbourne were among the album’s guest vocalists. The 1996 DEP Sessions, Iommi’s second solo album, was released in late 2004. Although this CD was recorded in 1996, it was never officially published.

However, a bootleg dubbed Eighth Star was available with a drum track by Dave Holland. Glenn Hughes sang on the record, and with the release of his third solo album, Fused, he continued his work with Hughes. Kenny Aronoff, the drummer for John Mellencamp, completed the trio for the album, which was released on July 12, 2005. Mike Fleiss’ movie production business Next Films has contracted Iommi to score a series of horror films branded Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi has been a part of the Rock Aid Armenia project since 1989. Iommi and his colleague Ian Gillan were granted the Orders of Honor — Armenia’s highest honour – by the Prime Minister of Armenia in October 2009 for their assistance following the Spitak earthquake. They established the ensemble WhoCares and produced “Out of My Mind,” a single that was released on May 6, 2011, to raise money for a music school in Gyumri, Armenia. When Iommi was diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma in January 2012, Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian wrote to express his support, saying, “We know your spirit is strong as energy that you need now, when things look tough.”
