his life sheltering behind enemy lines. He played a bisexual movie star who marries starlet Natalie Wood in Inside Daisy Clover (1965), for which he won a Golden Globe for best new star, and reunited with her for Sydney Pollack’s This Property Is Condemned (1966)—again, as her lover, but this time in a picture that was even more successful. In Arthur Penn’s The Chase, he starred alongside Jane Fonda for the first time (on an equal basis). This was Redford’s one and only collaboration with Marlon Brando. Fonda and Redford starred together again in the successful big-screen adaptation of Barefoot in the Park (1967) and again in Pollack’s The Electric Horseman (1979), which was followed 38 years later by the Netflix film Our Souls at Night.
Beginning in 1973, Redford had a near-unprecedented four-year run of box office success. Jeremiah Johnson (1972) would have been the second highest-grossing film in 1973 based on box office receipts from early 1973 to its second re-release in 1975. The Way We Were (1973), a romantic period drama starring Barbra Streisand, was the 11th highest-grossing picture of 1973. The Sting (1973), a crime caper reuniting Redford with Paul Newman, became the top-grossing film of 1974 and one of the top 20 highest-grossing films of all time when adjusted for inflation, as well as earning Redford his lone Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The romantic drama The Great Gatsby (1974) was the year’s eighth-highest grossing film. The Great Waldo Pepper (1975), a 1920s aviation drama, and the spy thriller Three Days of the Condor (1975), both starring Faye Dunaway, were Redford’s hit films in 1975, finishing at Nos. 16 and 17 in box office grosses, respectively. Redford received the Golden Globe for Favourite World Film Star in 1975, 1977, and 1978, a popularity-based award that is no longer given.
All the President’s Men (1976), starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, was a watershed moment in Redford’s career. He was not only the executive producer and co-star of the film, but its serious subject matter—the Watergate scandal—and endeavour to show journalism realistically reflected the actor’s off-screen concerns for political causes. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Alan J. Pakula), and won Best Screenplay (Goldman). It was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

This picture reunited him with Jane Fonda, and it was the ninth most grossing film of 1980. Later same year, he starred as a prison warden in the drama Brubaker (1980), in which he attempted to change the institution. In addition, his directorial debut, Ordinary People, which depicted the downfall of an upper-class American family following the loss of a son, was one of the most critically.
Out of Africa (1985), directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, was a box office triumph (combined 1985 and 1986 grosses placed it at No. 5 in 1986), received a Golden Globe for Best Picture, and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Redford was not nominated for Best Actor or Actress, but Streep was. The film was Redford’s biggest hit of the decade, as well as the most successful of Redford and Pollack’s seven collaborations. then starred in the baseball drama The Natural shortly after (1984).
Legal Eagles (1986), in which Redford co-starred with Debra Winger, was merely a minor box office triumph. Following that, his second directorial effort, The Milagro Beanfield War (1987), failed to garner the same amount of interest as Ordinary People.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Redford remained a significant star. In 1992, he released A River Runs Through It, his third picture as a director, which was a comeback to popular success for Redford as a director and elevated a young Brad Pitt to greater fame. In 1993, Redford starred in Indecent Proposal as a billionaire businessman who questions a couple’s morals, and the film became one of the year’s biggest hits. In the newsroom romance Up Close & Personal (1996), he co-starred with Michelle Pfeiffer, and in The Horse Whisperer (1998), he co-starred with Kristin Scott Thomas and a young Scarlett Johansson. [4] Redford continued to work in political films such as Havana (1990), in which he played Jack Weil, a professional gambler in 1959 Cuba during the Revolution, and Sneakers (1992), in which he co-starred with River Phoenix and Sidney Poitier, his first collaboration with the star who had achieved film success several years before Redford.
In Rod Lurie’s prison drama The Last Castle (2001), he played a disgraced Army general sentenced to prison. In the same year, Redford reteamed with Brad Pitt for Spy Game, which was another hit for the duo, but this time with Redford transitioning from director to actor. He had planned to direct and star in a sequel to The Candidate at the time, but the project never materialised. Sacred Planet (2004), a sweeping voyage across the globe to some of the world’s most exotic and endangered locales, was narrated by Redford, a major environmental campaigner. Redford played a wealthy businessman in The Clearing (2004), a thriller co-starring Helen Mirren, whose kidnapping reveals the secrets and flaws that led to his obtaining the American Dream.
With The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), a coming-of-age road film about a young medical student named Ernesto “Che” Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado, Redford returned to producing. It also looked into the political and socioeconomic issues that influenced Guevara and determined his future in South America. Redford was recognised by director Walter Salles for being instrumental in getting the film made and distributed after spending five years on it.
