David Lee Ragan (born December 24, 1985) is a professional stock car racing driver from the United States. He races part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series for Front Row Motorsports in the No. 36 Ford Mustang, and he also works as a commentator for NASCAR on Fox and NASCAR Race Hub.

Ragan, the son of former racer Ken Ragan, was born in Unadilla, Georgia, and began racing at the age of 12 in the Bandolero Series. He began racing in the Goody’s Dash Series with Cam Strader four years later. He went to the Legends Pro-Division after a year to race for Mark Martin. He finished fourth in the point standings at the end of the season. Ragan began racing in the Camping World Truck Series, Nationwide Series, and ARCA Racing Series when he was 18 years old.

In 2007, he moved up to the Sprint Cup Series, driving for Roush Fenway Racing and replaced Mark Martin in the No. 6 car. He had 30 top-ten finishes in the series between 2007 and 2011.

Ragan won his first Sprint Cup Series race, the Coke Zero 400, at Daytona International Speedway, on July 2, 2011. His second victory, the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway in May 2013, was also Front Row Motorsports’ maiden victory.Ragan was born in December 1985 in Unadilla, Georgia, to retired racer Ken Ragan.


Ragan began racing at the age of 12 in the Bandolero Series. He won twelve races and the National Championship the following year. For the second time in his career, he won the National Championship in 1999. Ragan and Cam Strader started racing in the Goody’s Dash Series in 2001. During the season, the two worked on late models for Ragan’s 2002 season. He began racing for Mark Martin in the Legends Pro-Division in 2002. He finished fourth in the final point standings at the end of the season.

Ragan began competing in the Craftsman Truck Series, as well as the Busch Series and the ARCA Re/Max Series, when he was 18 years old. He qualified second in his first career start in the ARCA Series, however due to a tyre problem, he was unable to complete the race.  For Fiddleback Racing, his debut race in the Craftsman Truck Series was at Texas Motor Speedway, where he qualified 28th and finished 20th. He failed to qualify for one event and failed to finish six of the ten races he competed in throughout the season. Ragan also competed in one Busch Series race, finishing 31st after starting 36th at Homestead Miami Speedway.The next season, he competed with Roush Racing: Driver X in the Truck Series as the co-driver of the No. 6 Roush Racing Ford F-150. He finished one race in the top five, eight in the top ten, and one in the pole position after competing in 19 events in the series.

Ragan also competed in three Busch Series events and 19 ARCA Racing Series events in 2005, winning one race and earning three pole positions, eight top-five finishes, and 11 top-ten finishes.He competed in three Busch Series eventsand two Nextel Cup Series events during the 2006 season.

Ragan switched to the Nextel Cup Series for the 2007 season, driving the number 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford Fusion. He also competed in both the Nextel Cup and the Busch Series for the NASCAR Rookie of the Year title, finishing second in the Nextel Cup Series and winning the award in the Busch Series.During the Cup season, Ragan finished 23rd in the point standings with two top-five finishes, one of which was in the 2007 Daytona 500. He competed in the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series, and two ARCA Racing Series races in 2008. During the Cup season, he finished 13th in points with six Top 5s and 14 Top 10s. He finished seven times in the top five and 21 times in the top ten during the Nationwide season. Ragan finished fourth overall in the final standings. He only competed in the Cup Series and the Nationwide Series the following year, in 2009. During the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, he finished 27th in points with zero Top 5s and two Top 10s. In the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series season, he won two races and finished 18th in points, with five Top 5s and 15 Top 10s.

He only raced in the Sprint Cup Series during 2010. He finished the season with zero top fives, three top ten finishes, and a point total of 24th. He came close to winning the Daytona 500 in 2011, but was disqualified for changing lanes before crossing the line on the restart with two laps to go.  He won the Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 21, 2011, passing Brad Keselowski with two laps remaining.After a late effort from teammate Matt Kenseth, he won the Coke Zero 400 on July 2, 2011, earning his first career Sprint Cup victory.

He was eligible to run in the “wild card” race to earn a spot in the Sprint Cup Chase. He finished 4th in the final race before the Chase at Richmond after a few disappointing finishes a few weeks prior, but was 54 points behind 13th to qualify for the Chase. In the season-opening Nationwide Series event at Daytona, he rode for GC Motorsports International.  Ragan had a rough start with FRM, crashing out on the second lap of the Daytona 500 and finishing last. He would eventually finish 28th in the Cup Series points standings.

Ragan had a changing array of sponsors during the 2013 season. He began the season with a crash at the Daytona 500 (together with two other teammates, David Gilliland and Josh Wise), and finished no higher than 20th in the first nine races. Ragan, on the other hand, started the green–white–checker restart in 10th place during the Aaron’s 499. Teammate Gilliland was able to assist him in passing Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, and Carl Edwards on the final lap, allowing him to win the race. This was his first win with Front Row Motorsports, as well as the team’s first Sprint Cup victory,and the first NASCAR victory for Farm Rich, his race sponsor. The 34 team improved even more in 2013, with sixteen top-25 finishes, including the win, a 12th-place result at Bristol Motor Speedway’s Irwin Tools Night Event, and a sixth-place finish at the autumn Talladega race. However, three engine problems in a row during the Chase pushed Ragan to 28th place in the standings.

Ragan returned to the Front Row Motorsports No. 34 for the 2014 season, with Farm Rich and CSX as sponsors. Ragan joined Biagi-DenBeste Racing in the No. 98 Ford for multiple races in the Nationwide Series this season. With 5 laps to remaining in the 2014 Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway, Ragan scored his first top-10 finish on a non-restrictor plate circuit with Front Row Motorsports by gambling on track position. It was his first top-10 finish of the season, and it had a paint scheme honouring the late Wendell Scott, who also drove the number 34. Ragan came in 32nd place in terms of points. In 2015, Ragan returned to Front Row Motorsports. Ragan’s owner points were awarded to new teammate Cole Whitt, although Ragan still qualified for the Daytona 500 and finished 17th.

After that, a 22nd-place finish in Las Vegas and a 21st-place finish in Phoenix followed. He finished 15th at Auto Club after making moves on many late restarts.
