Scott’s sister Tamika met Kandi Burruss while attending Tri-Cities performing arts high school in East Point, Georgia. The three began singing together, and Tamera Coggins, a fourth member, was recruited, albeit her stint with the group was brief. Xscape was created after “Tiny” Cottle was asked to audition for the girls.
Jermaine Dupri quickly noticed Xscape and signed the group to his So So Def Recordings label. On October 12, 1993, the band released their debut album, Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha.
The album reached number seventeen on the Billboard 200 chart and number three on the Top R&B Albums chart in the United States. It was a critical and commercial triumph, with two top ten songs and platinum certification within a year. Following the success of their debut album, Xscape released Off the Hook, their second studio album, in 1995. The album eventually achieved platinum status.
Traces of My Lipstick, their third and final studio album, debuted at number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200 and number six on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop album chart, selling over a million copies in the United States. LaTocha Scott initially departed the group after Traces of My Lipstick to pursue a solo career. Tamika issued an apology to Kandi.

The album did not perform as well on the charts as the first single, peaking at #72 on the Billboard 200 in the United States.
