She rose to prominence as a member of the female vocal quartet Xscape in 1992. For her contributions to the TLC smash song “No Scrubs,” she earned a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 2000. Since its second-season launch on July 30, 2009, Burruss has starred in the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Burruss won the third season of The Masked Singer, a Fox competition show.Burruss is the daughter of Reverend Titus Burruss Jr. and Joyce Jones, and was born in East Point, Georgia.Patrick Riley (1968–1991), her older brother, killed in a vehicle accident in 1991.

Burruss graduated from East Point, Georgia’s Tri-Cities High School in 1994.At the age of 15, she made her debut on the BET series Teen Summit.LaTocha Scott was a member of a band called Precise before joining Xscape. Scott’s sister Tamika met Kandi Burruss while attending Tri-Cities performing arts high school in East Point, Georgia. The three began singing together, and Tamera Coggins, a fourth member, was recruited, albeit her stint with the group was brief. Xscape was created after “Tiny” Cottle was asked to audition for the girls.

Jermaine Dupri quickly noticed Xscape and signed the group to his So So Def Recordings label. On October 12, 1993, the band released their debut album, Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha.

The album reached number seventeen on the Billboard 200 chart and number three on the Top R&B Albums chart in the United States. It was a critical and commercial triumph, with two top ten songs and platinum certification within a year. Following the success of their debut album, Xscape released Off the Hook, their second studio album, in 1995. The album eventually achieved platinum status.

Traces of My Lipstick, their third and final studio album, debuted at number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200 and number six on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop album chart, selling over a million copies in the United States. LaTocha Scott initially departed the group after Traces of My Lipstick to pursue a solo career. Before putting on another sabbatical until 2005, the women rejoined and made appearances on the soundtracks of Big Momma’s House and Hardball.

In 2017, TV One planned to make an unofficial film about Xscape, which Kandi Burruss did not want to happen since it would be detrimental to her and the group’s history. She contacted the other members of the band to discuss the possibility of establishing their own show. Xscape: Still Kickin’ It was a four-episode miniseries titled Xscape: Still Kickin’ It. The show premiered on BravoTV on November 5, 2017 and is currently airing. Before Kandi could rejoin the group, she demanded an apology from Tamika Scott, who claimed in a 2007 interview that Burruss had broken up the group by sleeping with Jermaine Dupri’s father, Michael Mauldin. Kandi demanded an apology[14] for Scott’s false assertion, but she did admit that she and Dupri were involved (though Burruss believes that wasn’t the reason for the group’s breakup). Tamika issued an apology to Kandi.

Burruss shifted his concentration to production and songwriting when Xscape disbanded. Burruss co-wrote three huge hit songs in 1999 with Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs: TLC’s “No Scrubs,” Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills,” and Pink’s first single, “There You Go.”  All three songs were co-written by Burruss’s former groupmate Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and “No Scrubs” was co-written by Burruss’s former groupmate Tameka “Tiny” Cottle.

Kandi’s debut album, Hey Kandi…, was released in 2000 and featured the hits “Don’t Think I’m Not” and “Cheatin’ on Me.” On the Billboard Hot 100, “Don’t Think I’m Not” reached number 24. The album did not perform as well on the charts as the first single, peaking at #72 on the Billboard 200 in the United States.

She was the first African-American woman to be honoured with the honour. For her Real Housewives of Atlanta co-star Kim Zolciak, Burruss rewrote and executive produced the 2009 single “Tardy for the Party.”Kandi Burruss and her cooperating songwriter/producer, Rodney “Don Vito” Richard, sued Zolciak for income gained from “Tardy for the Party” on March 12, 2013. Burruss’ lawyer, RHOA castmate Phaedra Parks, claims that her clients wrote the song for Zolciak and that Zolciak released and sold the track “without plaintiffs’ knowledge, licence, or approval,” according to the paperwork. damages, attorney’s fees, and a jury trial. On October 12, 2013, the action was dismissed when the presiding judge determined that Burruss had failed to provide sufficient evidence of copyright infringement.

Burruss’ first EP, the Fly Above EP, was released on October 29, 2009, after a sabbatical from music. Burruss stated in December 2009 that she had negotiated a deal with Asylum Records after her Capitol Records deal fell through.  Kandi Koated, her second album, was released in December 2010.  Burruss also formed the Peach Candy duo with Atlanta female rapper Rasheeda.

“Boy, let’s not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and put that body on me,” a line from Ed Sheeran’s 2017 song “Shape of You,” one of the most successful singles of all time, drew comparisons to “No Scrubs” in its lyrical rhythm, particularly in the pre-chorus line, “Boy, let’s not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and put that body on me.” Burruss, Cottle, and Briggs were given co-writing credits on “Shape of You” as a result. Burruss replaced DeShawn Snow on The Real Housewives of Atlanta in its second season, which premiered in July 2009.  She has now appeared in every season of the show, making her the longest-serving member of the cast. She had recently become engaged to her fiance A.J. and was shown expressing interest in resuming her singing career when she first joined the show.

Burruss became close with castmates Phaedra Parks and Porsha Williams in subsequent seasons, even giving the latter a role in her production of A Mother’s Love, which she and her husband, Todd Tucker, wrote and produced. A split between Phaedra and Kandi emerged during her pregnancy with son Ace, eventually deteriorating due to unpaid production fees owed by Parks to Tucker.
