Sophie has realised her dream and is currently starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spectacular musical. I hope you like reading Sophie’s comments.

You were born in the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, in the settlement of Tonypandy. What was it like to grow up in that area?
It’s a lovely place, and I’m proud to call it home, even though there aren’t many opportunities for performers. You, like many other students, performed in school plays and musicals. The Sound of Music, most likely. Briggita was my character!

From a young age until your early teens, you were a member of the Mid-Rhondda Operatic Society. What impact did that have on your growth as a vocalist and performer?
It provided me with a lot of experience and was a lot of fun. I did maybe ten shows, and it helped me learn more about musicals.

You appeared on television before your stage triumph, including CBBC’s The Big Performance and S4C’s The Big Talent Show, as well as a centennial documentary about the Tonypandy Riots (BBC Wales). What is the difference between performing on television and performing on stage?
Although I enjoy both, they are extremely different. I’m really at ease in front of the camera. Television, like theatre, is a highly intimate medium.

You also appeared on X Factor before Over the Rainbow. What life lessons have you gained from participating in these reality TV shows?
That everything is experience, and that getting knocked back may make you a better performance if handled correctly.

You shared a house with Stephanie Fearon and Tegan Edwards during Over The Rainbow. What was it like to live among individuals who were also competitors?Fine. I had a great time living with the girls.

What are some of your favourite memories from the night you made your debut as Dorothy?
Seeing so many of my friends and family members present to support me! As well as receiving a standing ovation during the curtain calls. I sobbed uncontrollably.

How did it feel knowing there were so many Tonypandy Community College supporters in the audience the night you played as Dorothy? It was incredible. My school is quite helpful.

You had Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber playing the piano during Dorothy rehearsals, with Bill Kenwright sitting nearby, watching. What role have they had in your journey?I can’t express my gratitude to them both enough. They have truly taken me under their protection. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for their assistance. They are two really wonderful gentlemen.

You completed your training at The Arts Educational Schools in London while playing the role of Alternate Dorothy. How has Ceris Deverill, Musical Director Chris Hocking, and the rest of the staff aided you in your career?Yes, absolutely. I’d never taken professional singing lessons before.

You recently made your ‘debut’ as the full-time Dorothy after being confirmed for the starring part. Did it feel special and different from the first time you played the role?Yes, I’m starting to feel like a member of the cast. It’s difficult but rewarding.

What would you use to describe Dorothy?Optimistic, kind, a dreamer, and a formidable opponent. What’s it like to be backstage at a Wizard of Oz performance?I don’t get to see backstage because I’m never off. It is, nevertheless, quite frantic.Which scene in the musical is your favourite?Emerald City is one of my favourite shows since the entire cast is on stage and it’s so much fun and colourful.

With Michael Crawford’s replacement as The Wizard, Russell Grant, you now have another seasoned performer to study from. How crucial was it for you to have such professionals around you when you were just starting out?
It’s been quite significant. Michael Crawford is a living legend who has taught me a great deal. Russell is a lot of fun and has taught me a lot.

Performing with animals can be difficult at times, according to Sophie Evans. Can you tell us about a time when Toto was a little “naughty” on stage? One of the dogs likes to hump my arm every now and then – ha ha.

Away from the stage, you and other Welsh celebrities spent eight days at a campsite in the summer of 2011 studying the Welsh language. Can you tell me about that event and how essential it is for you to be Welsh?
Being Welsh is extremely important to me, and I had a great time working on Cariad@iaith. It’s something I’d like to do again.According to what I’ve read, you got your singing voice from your mother. Your father is Welsh, thus he must be able to sing.He isn’t very good, ha ha.How important is it for you to go back to your childhood home in Wales and keep your “boots on the ground”?

Every weekend, I pay a visit. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends at home. They keep me in check. You’ve also sung a duet with Welsh baritone Mark Llewelyn Evans on his debut album Let the Light In, in addition to appearing on stage. Do you have any further recordings in the works?Yes. I’d like to release singles, but they’d have to be more pop-oriented.

I’d want to ask you a few simple questions…Which colour is your favourite?Green, red, and purple are among my favourite colours. What is your favourite dog breed?Jack Russell is a dog breed.

What do you think a dog’s name should be? Something completely out of the ordinary, like Henry.Where would you go for a day if you could travel anywhere in the world? HawaiiLast but not least… Do you have anything to say to your supporters?I can’t express my gratitude enough to those who have helped me. They are always extremely nice to me, and I appreciate everything they do for me.
