Fantasia Monique Barrino (born June 30, 1984), better known by her stage name Fantasia, is an R&B singer from the United States. In 2004, she won the third season of the reality television show American Idol, which catapulted her to prominence. Following her victory, she released “I Believe,” her debut single, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that, she released her debut album, Free Yourself, which was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and won Barrino three Grammy nominations in 2006.

Fantasia, her second album, was released in 2006, and featured the hit “When I See U,” which spent eight weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list. This album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and garnered three Grammy nominations in 2008. Barrino was reared in High Point, North Carolina, by his parents, Diane and Joseph Barrino. Her first cousins are the R&B duo K-Ci & JoJo. The Barrino Brothers, a 1970s R&B band, were her uncles. She attended Andrews High School in High Point, North Carolina, despite her travels. After being raped by a classmate, she dropped out of high school, feeling humiliated and bullied. She fell pregnant aged 16 and gave birth to her daughter, Zion Quari Barrino, with her ex-boyfriend Brandel Shouse on August 8, 2001. Barrino’s presentation was a staging of the Porgy and Bess standard “Summertime,” which left her in tears from “feeling the song” and won plaudits from the judges, as well as being selected among AOL’s top television moments of 2004.

Barrino’s second performance of “Summertime” for the season’s final performance drew praise from the judges once again; Simon Cowell remarked that she was the best contestant to ever compete in any competition, including the more than seventy Idol champions crowned nationally and internationally since the show’s first global incarnations. On May 26, 2004, almost 65 million votes were cast in the final to choose the winner, up from 24 million in 2003. Barrino won by 1.3 million votes over runner-up Diana DeGarmo.  She was the youngest American Idol champion at the age of 19 until Jordin Sparks, aged 17 years old, won the show on May 23, 2007.

Barrino made numerous television appearances to promote her record during the spring and winter of 2005. Barrino disclosed in the September 2008 issue of Sister 2 Sister magazine that her absences from The Color Purple were due to the growth of a cyst on her voice chords. She was forced to have surgery right away, which revealed that she had a tumour on her voice chords. She now reports that the tumour was totally removed after a successful surgery, and she is doing well.

Barrino’s sophomore album, Fantasia, garnered two Grammy nominations, and she began production on her third studio album in 2008. She announced on the red carpet of the 2008 Grammy Awards that the new album’s sound would be a fusion of the musical areas she has explored, including American Idol and Broadway. She also announced that she will be creating some of the songs for the album, as well as working with Missy Elliott, The Underdogs, and Midi Mafia, who produced .
