Ferguson has hosted the ABC television network’s American game show The Hustler since 2021. Ferguson was born on May 17, 1962, in Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow’s Springburn neighbourhood to Robert and Janet Ferguson.  He and his family relocated from their Springburn flat to a Development Corporation house in the adjacent New Town of Cumbernauld when he was six months old, where he grew up “chubby and bullied.”  They lived there during a time when Cumbernauld was rehousing many Glaswegians fleeing the city’s bad housing conditions and World War II destruction.  Ferguson went to Cumbernauld High School and Muirfield Primary School.Ferguson dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and began an apprenticeship as an electronics technician at a local Burroughs Corporation facility.

When he was 13, he travelled to the United States for the first time to see an uncle who resided on Long Island, near New York City.He worked in construction in Harlem when he relocated to New York City in 1983.Before returning to Scotland, Ferguson worked as a bouncer at the bar Save the Robots.Ferguson began his career in the entertainment industry as a drummer for Glasgow punk bands such as the Night Creatures and Exposure when he was a teenager.

He later joined The Bastards from Hell, a punk band.Ferguson attributes his interest in comedy to Capaldi. When he was 18, he worked as a studio musician and toured Scotland with Nico, playing drums for her on a few occasions.

He chose to develop a character that he characterised as a “parody of all the über-patriotic native folk singers who appeared to infiltrate every public performance in Scotland” after a nerve-wracking first comedy appearance.Capaldi gave the character the moniker “Bing Hitler.”

Ferguson made his debut as the character in Glasgow, and he went on to be a sensation at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1986. Ferguson, on the other hand, was already talking about retiring Bing by the end of the year. “You can’t write for just one character forever,” he observed at the press presentation of an alternative pantomime of Sleeping Beauty (which he co-wrote with Capaldi). In the 1980s, a recording of his theatrical performance as Bing Hitler was produced at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre and released; a Bing Hitler monologue (“A Lecture for Burns Night”) is included on the Honey at the Core collection cassette.

Ferguson made television appearances as ‘Confidence’ in Red Dwarf, on STV’s Hogmanay Shows, and in the 1993 One Foot in the Grave Christmas special One Foot in the Algarve after his success at the Edinburgh Festival. The Craig Ferguson Show, a one-off comedy pilot for Granada Television, had its pilot shown in 1990. Paul Whitehouse and Helen Atkinson-Wood also appeared in the film.  He was asked to anchor Friday at the Dome, a 75-minute live music show, by Channel 4 in 1991.  2000 Not Out, his own BBC Scotland show, premiered in 1992.

He hosted The Dirt Detective, a six-part archaeology TV series for STV in 1993. In 1993, he was also handed a six-part BBC One television series. The Ferguson Theory was a combination of stand-up and sketches taped the day before it aired. In 2017, it was revealed that he would make his first appearance on UK television in 25 years as a guest star in BBC Scotland’s comedy Still Game, which would air in 2018.

Ferguson was also a smash hit in the realm of musical theatre. In 1991, he made his Broadway debut as Brad Majors in the London production of The Rocky Horror Show. In the London Union Chapel production of Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom in 1994, Ferguson played Father MacLean. In the same year, he appeared on the Edinburgh Fringe as Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple.Ferguson moved to Los Angeles in November 1994 after meeting his future agent Rick Siegel at the Edinburgh Festival and advising him to visit the United States. His first role in America was as baker Logan McDonough on the ABC comedy Maybe This Time, which aired from 1995 to 1996 and starred Betty White and Marie Osmond.

Mr. Wick, the titular character’s boss, was his breakout role in the United States, which he played on The Drew Carey Show from 1996 until 2003. He played the role with an over-the-top aristocratic English accent, “to make up for decades of English actors playing poor Scottish accents.” The cornerstone of his “revenge” in his comedy extravaganza “A Wee Bit o’ Revolution” was James Doohan’s portrayal of Montgomery Scott on Star Trek. (However, at the end of one episode, Ferguson broke the fourth wall and began speaking in his trademark Scottish brogue to the audience at home.) His image was recognised for his one-of-a-kind methods of dismissing employees, with the most common last name of those going to be dismissed being “firing Johnson.”  After departing the programme in 2003, he remained a recurring character for the next two seasons, and was included in the two-part series finale in 2004.

Ferguson made his choice before Letterman’s announcement, but agreed to wait until the outcry to Letterman’s decision calmed down before making his own public.
