Paul John Hollywood (born March 1, 1966) is an English celebrity chef and television host who has been a judge on The Great British Bake Off since 2010. As a teenager, Hollywood started working in his father’s bakery and went on to work as the chief baker at a variety of British and international hotels. Following his return from Cyprus, Hollywood appeared as a guest on a number of BBC and ITV shows in the United Kingdom.

They strive to persuade bakers to wear gloves, and rubber gloves when kneading bread in this world of health and safety. What do you mean? This is one of the world’s oldest traditions, and getting bakers to wrap their hands around the dough so they can’t feel it is a touch that can’t be taught; it’s something you have to practice, practice, practice, and get used to. You can make anything once you have that touch.

It was really early when those ginger biscuits were made. I was about six or seven years old at the time, and my mother used to cook them frequently, primarily on weekends. However, they were quite tasty. It’s a little cookie-like, in that there’s syrup in it, so it bakes rapidly and retains moisture. So, when you heat up this mixture in a pan — which is what you do — you roll the little balls in your fingers, smooth them out, and bake them off, and they’re just fantastic. They were the first time I had ever baked. And it’s hard to beat that with a cup of tea.

We’d be lying flat if we were more relaxed. Last year, there was a lot of pressure on us to make the transition to C4, but this year we’ve all settled into our positions and had a great time filming; everyone has found their niche very naturally. I’m not sure when the Hollywood Handshake began; I once shook a baker’s hand to say “well done,” and it grew from there. It’s usually given out when they’re almost flawless. In this series, there have been times when I’ve handed out three in a challenge and one in a Showstopper.

I’m not sure why it’s so effective. It shouldn’t work because we’re a dysfunctional family, yet it does. We have a strong bond that is both natural and real, and we love each other’s company. Last Christmas, we even arranged our own Christmas Bake Off lunch at Sandi’s, complete with a delectable Danish roast and some fantastic wines. This year, I believe it is my turn!

We spend so much time together, yet our personalities are all so diverse. Nothing was forced; it just happened. Noel and I have an artistic side, and the comedic factor unites us all; we have the same sense of humor. Prue and I are similar in that we both enjoy food. I knew there was something special about us from the moment we met. She is incredibly simple to work with because she is so natural.

She is well-versed in what is correct and incorrect. Prue is fantastic and always rises to the occasion. Justified! We did a lot of casting at first with a lot of different folks, and they were all great. But with Prue, I just knew she was the one, and the way we were chatting off-camera, I knew it was going to work. I did offer some initial assistance to her at the start of the previous series, but I no longer need to do so.
