Peter Atencio (born March 15, 1983) is an American film and television director best known for directing the sketch comedy series Key & Peele and the duo’s 2016 feature film Keanu. In 2016, Atencio directed the action comedy picture Keanu, which starred Key and Peele and was released on April 29 in the United States by Warner Bros. In 2017, Atencio directed the action comedy series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and was released on December 15, 2017 in the United States by Amazon Studios. On April 14, 2021, Legendary Entertainment announced that Atencio would direct The Machine, a comedy picture based on Bert Kreischer’s life and career, in which he also stars.
“From the brilliant minds of Key and Peele,” say the ads for the upcoming picture “Keanu,” which blends kitten cuteness and gangster toughness. That would be Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, stars of Comedy Central’s sketch television show “Key & Peele,” which ended its fifth and final season in 2015 after gaining a cult following that included President Barack Obama thanks to their razor-sharp sketches on masculinity, identity, and race. But it also comes from Peter Atencio’s intellect, who directed “Keanu” as well as practically every sketch in every episode of the programme (save for a few in the final season), making him a crucial but often underestimated part of the team’s success. Though he admits to being unhappy about the lack of attention for his contributions, he nevertheless recognises that the work is largely the invention of the two performers whose names appear in the title.
“It’s not a certain position,” Atencio stated of his contribution to the creative process. “I’ve always been like, ‘Let me service what you guys do while staying out of the way as much as possible.’” I believe that comedy directing has the potential to overstep its bounds and harm the comedy in some manner, so I’ve always tried to do everything I can to make the whole thing work.”
Rell (Peele) becomes enamoured with a stray kitten he takes up after his lover abandons him in “Keanu.” When his cat, whom he calls Keanu, is kidnapped by drug dealers, Rell enlists the help of his cousin Clarence (Key). Infiltrating the criminal underworld to rescue Keanu, the two humble Angelinos soon pass themselves off as vicious hitmen.
The nature of “Key & Peele” was such that the aesthetic altered from sketch to sketch, with Atencio proving particularly skilled at imitating the appearance and manner of specific film and television genres, placing Key and Peele’s characters into worlds that appeared fitting and believable. He convincingly drops two schlubs into the realm of an action movie in “Keanu.”
So it wasn’t a major deal when we came to making the movie. He was big and bossy, and he knew exactly how he wanted everything to look and feel.”
Atencio, 33, has a wide physique and is well over 6 feet tall. Ballcaps and thick jackets are his go-to outfits. In a New Yorker storey about Key and Peele, writer Zadie Smith described Atencio as “looking like a visiting cannabis dealer.”
Before joining the “Key & Peele” crew, Atencio, a Colorado native, had already directed two low-budget movies. One of these, “Night of the Dog,” was co-directed with coworkers at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, where he had his first employment. (Atencio introduced “Keanu” at the Cinerama Dome on April 27, claiming it wasn’t the first time he’d stood in front of an ArcLight audience with a microphone.)
As the two were putting together their show, Atencio met Key, who subsequently introduced him to Peele. Atencio fought hard with Comedy Central management to direct every skit and the stand-up parts in between.”Everyone said, ‘This is a terrible idea,’” said Atencio.
In retrospect, having Atencio handle everything was a risk that paid off because the show’s cohesive vibe contributed to its success. And when rehearsing for the film, Atencio’s mastery of the fast-paced flexibility required by the performance provided a hurdle.
“I had to choose a look and live with it, to figure out what would work for a plot and character arcs that lasted 90 minutes rather than four minutes.” And it’s something I really prefer to do: “Oh, right, this is a lot of fun, and I enjoy it.”
That initial contradiction between a tough-guy crime drama and a kitten’s cuddliness, as well as Rell and Clarence’s shifting attitudes — from fear to pretend bravado to true aggressiveness — is exactly what Peele and Key were exploring on the television show.

BIOGRAPHY:
“You don’t even have to think about it to understand it.” There’s something simple and classic about it that encapsulates the Key and Peele voice.” The cat also served a functional purpose in the storey. The initial cat-free concept for the picture was ” ‘Three Amigos’ meets ‘New Jack City,’ ” according to Peele, but he struggled with why the two protagonists would remain lost in the criminal underground during the writing process. The addition of the cat provided them with that rationale — and allowed Atencio to experiment with the juxtaposition of a cute kitten in the midst of images of heinous mayhem.
Seven cats were utilised during principle photography, with another used for pickup shots later in Los Angeles, in part because the kittens would grow swiftly and change size. “I knew from the start that I wanted everything to be done in the real world with the cats,” Atencio stated. After “Keanu,” the Atencio, Peele, and Key collaboration will be put on hold indefinitely. Though they are excited to concentrate on their individual projects now — Atencio is directing the pilot for the Amazon comedy “John-Claude Van Johnson,” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme — they are all keeping the option of working together again open. Key remarked, “It feels like the end of a chapter in what we hope will be a very, very long book.” “I promise we’ll never be out of each other’s lives again.”
“That book thing sounded real poetic,” Key paused, returning to the self-awareness that characterises Key and Peele’s and Atencio’s work. “Place that quote here.”PETER ATENCIO is a one-man show. Film, television, and commercials are all examples of this. Video Art is a type of visual art that consists of Atencio, an Emmy-winning filmmaker and producer, is best known for his work as the director and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “Key & Peele,” as well as his New Line Cinema breakout film “Keanu.”
It’s nearly hard not to watch some of his work on Comedy Central, Adult Swim, MTV, “Funny Or Die,” or with commercial brands like Pepsi and Hyatt if you turn on the television or go online. But now, Peter takes his more than a decade of experience to Amazon as producer/director of JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON, which is expected to be the year’s breakthrough smash series.
JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as martial arts and film superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme, who also operates as “Jean-Claude Van Johnson,” the world’s most dangerous undercover operative. Inventive, original, and fun, with all the cinematic qualities of a big screen action film, JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as martial arts and film superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme, but who also Unfortunately, Van Damme and Van Johnson both retired a few years ago after suffering a broken heart, and are now enjoying a plasticene life of semi-seclusion in the Hollywood hills. But a chance encounter with Vanessa, Van Damme’s sweetheart, gives him the idea that if he’s back in the game, both games, he can win her back. Back in front of the camera as Huckleberry Finn in a reimagining of “Tom Sawyer,” and back undercover as Jean-Claude Van Johnson or Jean-Claude Van Damme, he’s up against the most formidable foes he’s ever faced as danger approaches in both of his worlds.
Kat Foster will play Vanessa, Moises Aries will play Jeremiah, while Phylicia Rashad will play Jane, JCVD’s agent and secret boss.We go “undercover” and discuss about the mechanics of JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON in this exclusive conversation with PETER ATENCIO, from casting to cinematography to editing to construct to tone to sound to soundtrack and more!
JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON is so unique and inventive, Peter. Absolutely fantastic entertainment! And seeing Jean-Claude Van Damme, who has a fantastic sense of humour, step out in this manner makes this the ideal vehicle and showcase for him. Yes, absolutely! He does, in fact, have a great sense of humour. But, more significantly, what you’ve contributed to each of these episodes as a director, working with your fantastic DP, Jas Shelton, is what, in my opinion, sets the series unique. Because this is so polished, Dave Callaham’s storey and writing with the series throughline are elevated. Your action moments are just incredible. I’m not sure how you did it on such a tight budget, but it has the feel of a blockbuster or a major tentpole film. Wow, thank you very much! I don’t want to work with anyone else except Jas because he is so talented and skilled at what he does. We put in a lot of effort on the action, and I had a fantastic crew working on it. Aside from Jas, we had Casey O’Neill, a stunt coordinator who has worked on big films.
Part of the appeal of producing this programme is that we got to shoot in L.A., where there are so many amazing individuals working in the film industry who have families and want to stay. We were able to get a lot of individuals from the film industry to come do it because of the shorter timetable, and it just worked out really well. As a result, we had a fantastic team. It was a great time. On the screen, it comes through loud and clear. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank You have the script in your hands. So, how did you go about balancing a show that starts off lighthearted and humorous, but gradually builds in gravitas and drama as it progresses through the six episodes, ultimately revealing some real heart? It’s a lovely progression. So, as a filmmaker, how did you sit down and lay out your visual design and emotional tonal bandwidth together to accomplish this? The finest thing was having that roadmap, having it on the page. It was always brought up in our conversations.
We wanted to convey JC’s [Jean-Claude Van Damme’s] more emotional side. We wanted to trick viewers into thinking they were going to watch something really humorous, ridiculous, and over the top, and then kind of ground it and bring it down to a more dramatic and engaging level. As a result, the graphics and production of the series are designed to reflect that journey. So we started it a little bigger, sillier, and more humorous in terms of appearance and feel, hoping to plant visual seeds that would pay off as we carried it a little farther to this tonally different place while still making it feel cohesive.
Knowing it was going to come to this point where you really have to feel for him as a character, wanting to make sure all the seeds are planted in the proper way, and you’re really tugged along that path in a very organic way so they don’t notice it, was kind of the most essential thing for me. Our objective is that by the end of the last episode, viewers will have developed an emotional attachment to him and care for him that they never expected after seeing the first episode. So it’s really just a lot of planning; for the show, we had a good bit of prep time. We approached this broadcast more like a film than a typical television programme. Being able to direct all of the episodes greatly aids this. We designed and arranged it as if it were a feature film rather than a television show.
