she is a nice human who is generous with her time. Enjoy, and keep an eye on TNT for the rest of the NBA Playoffs coverage.
Maurer, Mitchell: The Bucks have received a lot more national attention now, as if they’ve “arrived” or “should truly be taken seriously,” yet on a local level, they were taken more seriously earlier in the season when they were consistently ripping off large wins. Have there been any other teams that have gone unnoticed in your time covering the league that you think should have been “saw coming” sooner?

Kristen Ledlow: I’m Kristen Ledlow, and I’m It’s intriguing because local media gets to watch their local club on a regular basis, so it takes a time to rewrite the NBA’s national perspective. For years, we’ve been all in on LeBron James or the Golden State Warriors, with the expectation that they’ll beat the clubs and players left standing at the end of the season.

The Warriors spent a long time to develop the notion that they were a club that would be the team to beat every year. Even as a back-to-back MVP, Stephen Curry was perhaps staring the end of his career in the face for a stretch of the season, so it takes a while to rewrite the national perspective, or the storey that we’re telling with the NBA from season to season, and I think that’s because local media gets to see the team on a daily basis and is privy to information, and perhaps sold on how good a team can be earlier on than the rest of us who, first and foremost, When you don’t have “the flashy superstar,” when you’re not playing the game in a way that creates headlines or highlights, but instead you’re winning regularly and quietly, I believe it takes a little longer to break onto the national scene.

That makes a lot of sense, and I like how you draw a link between Giannis and Steph Curry, because they came to the league on completely different paths to begin with. They were both picked outside the top-tier picks and were expected to be good, at least in Steph’s case, but no one expected them to be this good, and much more so in Giannis’ case. Perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves here, but how do you think those two storylines will play out in the Finals if the two teams now leading their respective Conference Finals meet? Is this going to be a Steph vs. Giannis storey?

KL: I sat down with Giannis yesterday morning and asked him if he’d let his mind wander to what an NBA Finals appearance would mean to the franchise, and he was adamant that he’s taking this series day by day, that he’s making adjustments day by day to beat the Raptors, but that it’s something that’s on his mind on a daily basis. “I wouldn’t call that victory, beating the Warriors at Oracle Arena while Steph Curry is ailing,” he joked when I noted his team’s success against the Warriors earlier this season. But, while I believe those two are exceptional, I believe you have compelling tales regardless of how things turn out.

Kristen Ledlow Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

MM: Now, it would be unfair to the Toronto Raptors, who are legitimately good in their own right, to disregard them, and one of the narratives in this series is Milwaukee’s plethora of depth versus the Raptors’ lack thereof. Do you believe the “depth versus no depth” plot is exaggerated, or is it a reasonable approach to assess how this series is progressing?

KL: I believe that’s a fair assessment of how the series has progressed. It’s almost unjust to ask your superstar to play over 50 minutes in a double overtime game and then do it again 48 hours later, especially for a Raptors team that claimed its depth throughout the regular season but has yet to see all of its players come up as needed this postseason. “Our team has played incredibly poorly in four separate games this playoffs,” Coach Nurse observed yesterday after Game 3, “and during the other games, we look like a team that’s pretty darn hard to beat.” It’s not just about Kawhi Leonard stepping up, it’s not just about Kyle Lowry, it’s about relying on guys like Marc Gasol (who took ownership for the Game Two loss, which helps set the tone), it’s about expecting more from guys like Danny Green, and when you look at what it took to beat a Bucks team that wasn’t playing its best on your home court, I think that’s a fair way to look at the series.

It’s always inspiring to watch folks who have achieved a certain degree of accomplishment and are willing and eager to assist the following generation. Kristen Ledlow of NBA TV is one of them! Kristen tweeted that she was now “working with young women to construct broadcast reels and resumes” on her Twitter page…when I saw that, I knew I had to contact her to learn more about her job and how you could learn more about her incredible offer.

Kristen’s on-air style and delivery can’t be taught, but working with someone like her to help you develop your own distinct on-air personality is something you should take advantage of if you get the opportunity. She works with one of the greatest agencies in the field, so you can be sure she’s gotten a lot of fantastic feedback on her resume and demo reel over the years, which she can now pass on to you. I sincerely hope you like our conversation and are able to absorb what she has to say.

At ABC 27 News in Tallahassee, Florida, I got my first on-air job. With our meteorologist Sean Parker, I hosted the daily “Good News Show.” I went to a Florida State University basketball game during my senior year of college and met some local media folks. Throughout the rest of my senior year, I maintained contact with the Sports Director at ABC 27, and as a result of our friendship, I was able to secure an audition at the station. While the industry has changed dramatically in the last eight years, my advice to young men and women trying to break into the profession remains the same: network! Because the broadcasting landscape has changed, think about how you can go “on the air” before you start your first job. Host a podcast, start a web series, or record a social media interview series! Concentrate on developing a brand, getting experience, and networking with industry experts.

r/nba is a subreddit dedicated to the NBA. Kristen Ledlow of NBA TV was interviewed.
Here at SMG, we’re big on networking. How has it helped you advance in your profession, and how might others do it more effectively?

Kristen: My network of industry professionals not only helped me secure my first position, but it has also helped me open numerous doors in my career since then. Instead than focusing on what can be gained, focus on building relationships. Also, make sure you check in on a frequent basis! For many in the television industry, following up without asking for favours is a welcome change.

You mention on your website that you work with CAA’s Matt Kramer; at what stage in a person’s career should they consider working with an agent?

Kristen: For years, I’ve worked with CAA’s Matt Kramer and couldn’t be happier with my representation. When a young broadcaster’s professional “limit” has been achieved without representation, usually after a first job (or two!) in the industry, they should seek representation. Seek representation early in your career that focuses on talent development.
