John Roger Stephens, better known by his stage name John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter, and producer who was born on December 28, 1978. Legend cooperated with renowned musicians and signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music label prior to the release of his debut album Get Lifted (2004). On Jay-“Encore,” Z’s Alicia Keys’ “You Don’t Know My Name,” Dilated Peoples’ “This Way,” Slum Village’s “Selfish,” Fort Minor’s “High Road,” and Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything,” Legend sang and played piano. The track “All of Me” from Legend’s fourth studio album Love in the Future (2013) reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

For co-writing the song “Glory” from the film Selma, Legend received an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe Award in 2015. He’s also the recipient of eleven Grammy Awards. Legend was nominated for a Tony Award in 2017 for co-producing Jitney for the Broadway stage.

Legend portrayed Jesus Christ in the NBC version of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, which premiered in 2018. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his starring performance and won for his work as the show’s producer, making him one of only 16 people and the first black man to win all four major American entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT). Legend is the second-youngest individual in history to achieve this feat. Legend has been a coach on The Voice since the season premiered in 2019.

“His mother sang and conducted the church choir, and his grandmother was the church organist,” according to his father, who was a drummer.  Legend said in 2004 that his parents had been divorced for 12 years before reconciling. Legend’s mother educated him at home.  He began playing the piano when he was four years old. He began singing with his church choir when he was seven years old.He was able to skip two grades due to his academic ability.

Legend began attending North High School in Springfield, Ohio, when he was 12 years old, and graduated four years later as salutatorian of his class.

According to an appearance on the Carlos Watson Show, Legend won a McDonalds Black History Month essay competition at the age of 15, answering the subject “How do you aim to make Black history?” with an essay about how he planned to be a successful musician.

Legend was accepted to Harvard University and given scholarships to Georgetown University and Morehouse College; instead, he chose to attend the University of Pennsylvania.

Legend was the president and musical director of the Counterparts, a co-ed jazz and pop a cappella group in college. His lead vocals on the group’s rendition of Joan Osborne’s “One of Us” (written by fellow Penn graduate Eric Bazilian of the Hooters) were praised, and the song was included on the track list of the 1998 Best of Collegiate a Cappella compilation CD. Legend was a member of the Onyx Senior Honor Society and the Sphinx Senior Society. Legend was exposed to Lauryn Hill by a friend while in college. On “Everything Is Everything,” a song from Lauryn Hill’s album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Hill hired him to play piano.

Legend began producing, composing, and recording his own music after graduating from college and working as a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He self-released two albums: a self-titled demo in 2000 and Live at Jimmy’s Uptown in 2001, both of which he sold at his gigs. Following that, he began working on his demo and submitting it to various record labels.  Legend was hired to sing during the hooks of West’s music after Devo Springsteen connected him to Kanye West, then an up-and-coming hip-hop artist. Following his joining to West’s company, he adopted his stage name based on a concept offered to him by poet J. Ivy and his perception of a “old-school sound.”

According to J. Ivy, “I heard your music and it reminded me of the old school music. You have the voice of a legend. In fact, that’s what I’m going to refer to you as from now on! I’ll refer to you as John Legend.” Others swiftly took on, including Kanye West, after J. Ivy continued to refer to him as “John Legend.” Despite his reluctance to choose a stage name, Stephens eventually announced John Legend as his new artist name. It debuted at number 7 on the US Billboard 200, selling 116,000 copies in its first week, thanks to production by Kanye West, Dave Tozer, and will.i.am.  It went on to sell 540,300 copies in the United States and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Evolver, his third studio album, was released in October.  When asked why the album was dubbed Evolver, he explained: “People may learn to expect certain things from certain artists, I believe. They expect you to remain in the same position as when you first started. Whereas I believe I want my career to be defined by the fact that I will not stay in the same area for long periods of time and that I will always attempt new things and explore. So I came up with the title ‘Evolver’ because I believe this album is an expression of that.”
