Brian Callihan’s storey is a familiar one for many young talent who move to Nashville in search of stardom as a country music artist only to become entangled.

With ambitious plans for Nashville, he left his small hometown in rural southern Georgia and spent years walking a tightrope between his need for the stage and the demands of a published songwriter. He was able to do this with greater ease as a child because a difficult childhood and a lack of contentment at home provided ample opportunity for the pursuit of escapism…which for him was music. At the age of 12, Callihan was already writing songs, and by the age of 16, he was a local hotshot, performing 2-hour sets in bars, venues, and at house parties. At such a young age, the scope of his original songs and his unflinching presence on stage drew constant attention. So, at the age of 21, he packed his belongings and moved to Nashville after several more years of honing his stage craft.

Finding your “group” of people to write with in Nashville is crucial, and for Callihan, that meant forming songwriting bonds with Josh Martin and Cole Swindell. He wrote every day, built up his repertoire and relationships, and two years later, in 2011, he got his first publishing agreement with Better Angels, despite his poor living accommodations, calling a friend’s shed his home. Callihan is now the proud tenant of a full-fledged house, and he’s writing music with people who have experienced the glory of a #1 hit. With a few of his songs on hold for Scotty McCreery, Dustin Lynch, and Dierks Bentley, he hits the ground running. Though he had no intention of moving to Nashville to work as a songwriter for other artists, his talent for it kept him on track. Several artists, including Cole Swindell, Dylan Scott, Trent Tomlinson, Halfway To Hazard, and others, have recorded his songs.

Callihan has had five publishing deals in nearly a decade, and while his love for writing songs is strong, his desire to be “the artist” is even stronger. So, in early 2020, he started working on his new album and released the first song, “Broke It Down,” written by Callihan, Harrison Kindy, and Larry McCoy, in the summer (Thomas Rhett “Make Me Wanna”). The song was soon hailed as a “classic country ballad, spinning lyrics that displays the fragility of his history, and transforms his sad storey into something beautiful” by music critics. The song served as a strong introduction, giving listeners a taste of what the talented young songwriter has to offer as an artist. On the other hand, his upcoming self-titled first album is a substantial and filling dinner.

The second single, “Hometown Boys,” drew the attention of music journalists right away, with American Songwriter Magazine stating that the song “relates to every guy” and premiering the music video. The song serves as a type of anthem for his upbringing in the country. He returned to his old haunts to record the music video, and even had some old acquaintances appear on screen with him. Following closely behind was the third song, “Same Thing She Told Me,” a gut punch ballad gasping for air as he tries to warn the next guy that her cunning love trap doesn’t change, only the guy who falls into it. “All A Man Needs” is the theme tune if you consider that the entire album is Callihan’s personal country boy proclamation, complete with Wranglers, boots, and a cowboy hat. It’s an old dog, an old automobile, and an old-fashioned way of life in the country that define the essence of existence. “Proud” is a two-sided coin that represents both the history of such a complete life lived and the pride in sharing that family name in an ode to his grandfather.

“Fallin’ For Her Angels” exemplifies Callihan’s skill as a seasoned songwriter. It’s an old narrative of a wicked lad and a decent girl, but it’s beautifully told on a soul level. Anyone who knows Brian Callihan personally can attest to his tenacity in life in general and his obstinacy in particular. He’s the type of guy that flies with confidence and targets his interests like a top calibre fighter pilot. So it’s not surprising that he elected to self-produce his first full-length album; what is surprising is how long it took him to accomplish so. Brian Callihan proves he can do it all on this stunning beginning to what will undoubtedly be a long season of important future album releases. From start to end, his kind of country music is 100 percent him, whether it’s with his pen, guitar, voice, or behind the controls.

Brian Callihan Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

You’re a fantastic songwriter, but your singing and performing abilities are equally impressive. What is your favourite part of the entire process, from start to finish?I appreciate the process of working with other creatives and being able to bounce ideas off one other. It’s fascinating to watch the entire process unfold, especially after you’ve written a successful song. The most difficult aspect would be remaining current with all of the constantly changing technologies.

“Broke It Down,” your new track, is fantastic! What prompted you to write this song in particular?I took a melody for the song into the writing session that day. When “Broke It Down” came up, we were sitting around brainstorming hooks and ideas. Once we got started, the song pretty much wrote itself. It’s really relatable because everyone has been broken down at some point in their lives.

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, many musicians are suffering with the consequences of cancelled shows and venues. How are you progressing with your music during this difficult time, and when can we expect to hear the EP?Being outside allows me to practise my social distancing. When you’re out hunting in the woods, there aren’t many people around. You’ve collaborated with a number of well-known authors. So far, what has been your most memorable experience? I’d have to go with David Lee Murphy. Growing up, I was a huge fan of his music, particularly his song “Dust On The Bottle.”

As a result, sitting down and writing a song with him was a lot of fun. Who would you choose to co-write and/or perform with today if you had the chance? Eric Church or Dierks Bentley are two names that come to mind. I admire both of their composing skills as well as the way they perform their tunes. And they both put on fantastic live performances! Callihan was born and reared on a tiny farm in South Georgia, where he played baseball and football until discovering his true calling when he discovered Keith Whitley. After being inspired by Whitley’s Greatest Hits, he bought a guitar (with money gained from weekends spent collecting overpopulated wild hogs) and began playing and writing his own music.

Callihan’s hard work paid off in 2011 when he got his first publishing agreement. Since then, he has written songs for Cole Swindell, Dylan Scott, Trent Tomlinson, Halfway To Hazard, and a variety of other artists. Callihan has performed at prominent festivals such as CMA Fest, Key West Songwriters Festival, and The Suwannee River Jam, and has shared the stage with several mainstream country music performers. What project(s) are you working on right now? I’ve been working on the new EP in the studio! What made you want to pursue a career in music, and when did you realise it? When I was 12 years old, I first heard Keith Whitley’s Greatest Hits Record. I was immediately drawn to the rawness of his voice and realised it was exactly what I wanted to do. What would you be doing for a living if you weren’t pursuing a career in music? Working on the farm in South Georgia, most likely.

You can find me in the woods if I’m not singing or writing! I enjoy going on hunts! Which celebrity do you have the biggest crush on? Reba, for sure! Which sports team(s) do you support? GO DAWGS! – University of Georgia What was the most recent film you saw? The Fallen Legends What’s the most recent record you’ve heard? The Wanting – Cody Jinks What album would you choose if you could only listen to one for the rest of your life? Keith Whitley’s Greatest Hits, of course! Which country song is the best of all time?  What is your favourite city/town you’ve visited while travelling? THE CITY OF KANSAS! What’s your favourite dish to eat? It’s Meat and Three! Who would you like to perform with in a duet? Womack, Lee Ann With whom would you like to go on a tour? Eric Church is a musician from the United States. What are your long-term career objectives? To perform in front of sold-out crowds!
