Shemar Moore Biography/Wiki
Shemar Moore: Of course. I haven’t done it in a long, but I used to do it on and off. It’s fantastic. Because the bags don’t hit back, I can hit the stuffing out of them. It was just a fun way to get some cardio in. But, because I ride for my mother, who has MS, I’ve become more interested in cycling. So, with a group of men from Criminal Minds, I completed a 100-mile charity bike ride.
Cooper: So you keep yourself quite busy?
Moore: Of course. Basketball is the only sport in which I am not particularly skilled, which I should not acknowledge. Because I’m half-white, I assume I have white man’s sickness.
Cooper: You’re not able to jump?
Moore: I can jump, but my left hand isn’t that strong. I can, however, play a mean game of horse. But no, I’ve participated in every sport imaginable. That sort of thing appeals to me. I wanted to be a baseball player before I came to Hollywood.
Then, because I was doing mountain bike stuff, I got into cycling, and I met some men at the event who told me I had a sissy bike. So now I have a new bike and all the accessories. Isn’t it true that you have to dress up? You look incredibly good as long as you’re connected to your bike; if you’re not attached to your bike, you just look like a dude in tights, which isn’t very cool.
Cooper: I recently returned from Ireland, where Lance Armstrong was competing in the Tour de France.
Moore: Are you sure? My coworkers are probably on the same level as Lance Armstrong. They participate in semi-pro racing and other activities. I’ve only got the fancy tights and the fancy all-carbon-fiber bike for myself. I may appear to be the part, but I’m only a bike-riding actress. So I pretend to be a rider.
But, yes, I suppose I do my best to do a little bit of everything. For me, athletics has always been a way of life. Working out in a gym becomes monotonous after a while, so you need to switch things up. I go to the sand dunes, Santa Monica stairwells, ride my bike, and box— Cooper: Are you talking about the sand dunes? Do you mean you’re a sand dune runner? Moore: You’re right. It’s about a hundred yards straight up. Many football players, as well as some basketball players, train there. I believe Kobe Bryant will go out with his trainer and do it. But, because I enjoy the heat and activity, I manage to keep it together. A good black isn’t prone to cracking. However, as I grow older, it is becoming more difficult.
Cooper: Tell me about your reaction to your mother’s MS diagnosis. So, how did that happen? Moore: My mother has been diagnosed with cancer for almost 12 years, and it’s been a difficult time for her. It was difficult for her physically, as well as for both of us emotionally. I suppose we were both in denial at first, so it took a while to get out of the gate and truly embrace the fact that she had it. Then we could concentrate on figuring out what it was and how to deal with it.
I was raised as an only child by a single mother, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to her for being my mentor and idol throughout my life. When they were handing out moms and sons, we told each other that we were at the front of the line. She was constantly attempting to save the planet. She was attempting to save the community. She was the mother of the neighborhood. Cooper: Where did this come from? What part of the country did you grow up in? Moore: I grew up in a lot of different places, but I spent most of my high school years in Palo Alto. I lived outside of the country for the first six years of my life. I was born in Oakland, California, in the United States, and I didn’t return until I was almost seven years old.
Cooper: You have a very heavy accent. Moore: (laughs) Sure, maybe a little bit. My mother speaks with a heavy accent. “Shemah, pahk the cah, Hahrvahrd Yahrd,” and all that. My mother is from Boston, so it’s “Shemah, pahk the cash, Harvard Yard,” and all that. I can typically pick up on people’s accents when I’m near them. My first language was Danish, but I only understood enough to say, “My diaper is soiled and I’m hungry.” After that, I moved to Bahrain and spent three years there.
As a result, when I was growing up, Denmark and Bahrain were our two mainstays. Cooper: Have you studied Arabic? Moore: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no My mother enrolled me in a British private school so that I could learn English, knowing that she would eventually return to the United States. In the 1970s, I was born. Martin Luther King had recently been assassinated in 1968, and civil rights were a hot topic. There was a lot of discontent at the time.
