Robert Richardson Jr. is an American professional stock car racing driver who was born on April 4, 1982.In 2002, he began driving at Texas Motor Speedway’s Richard Petty Driving Experience and Team Texas Driving School. The next season, in Romco Super Late Models, he finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. At Chicagoland Speedway in 2004, he made his Auto Racing Club of America debut. Richardson debuted in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in the No. 24 Chevrolet Silverado for Mighty Motorsports in the 2005 Las Vegas 350. Richardson competed in the Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega for Tommy Baldwin Racing, finishing 18th. This was the team’s best finish in the Sprint Cup since its debut in 2009, when the team started and parked for the majority of the season. Richardson competed in four races for Front Row Motorsports in 2010, and he also drove Brian Keselowski’s No. 92 Dodge in the Sprint Showdown.

For underfunded teams, Daytona proved to be much more difficult. Richardson and his crew aimed to improve their qualifying position after finishing 33rd out of 45 cars in the weekend’s first practise. He joined a pack of a dozen other underfunded teams, including all of TriStar Motorsports, with eight minutes left in the first session to attempt another run. On the first warm-up lap, the drivers noticed it was raining on the track halfway down the backstretch as they approached Turn 3. Mike Bliss was the first to contact the water and lose control, causing a multi-car accident.
When the accident began, Richardson rear-ended Benny Gordon’s #91 and slammed into the outside wall, seriously destroying his Chevrolet. The rainstorm that followed cancelled the rest of qualifying, and while Richardson was able to start 37th in the race thanks to Owner Points, R3 Motorsports was left with a damaged car and only a few hours to prepare the backup. Gordon was one of five drivers who did not qualify for the race.
Richardson, along with reserves Mike Bliss, Scott Lagasse, Jr., and Ross Chastain, finished at the back of the field in the race. Joey Gase, driving the #52 Vukelja Law Attorneys / Space Shuttle Inn Chevrolet, finished last at the green flag. Gase fell out of contention and had to make an unplanned pit stop on Lap 14 that cost him three laps. Richardson had already pulled his backup car behind the wall by the time Gase returned to the track, effectively ending his night.
Gase finished the race in 37th place, eleven laps behind race winner Kasey Kahne. Mike Harmon in his unsponsored #74 Dodge and Mike Bliss in his #19 backup vehicle were both passed by him. Tanner Berryhill, in his #17 National Cash Lenders Dodge, rounded out the Bottom Five.

(July 26, 2010) CHINA GROVE, N.C. — The larger tracks on the NASCAR circuit have always appealed to Robert Richardson, Jr. Richardson may be reconsidering his position following Saturday’s performance with the unsponsored No. 23 Chevrolet at O’Reilly Raceway Park.
The native of McKinney, Texas, had the 29th and 16th fastest marks in the two morning practises on the.686-mile track. The nicest aspect of the second session was that Richardson and his crew were third on the chart until others performed fake qualifying runs right at the end.
Richardson was the first driver to take the track in qualifying. He ran two laps, the second of which was two tenths quicker than his best practise performance. Richardson finished 29th out of 43 cars, which was his best starting position of the season.
From the moment the green flag was waved, it was clear that Richardson wanted to make a fast start on the historic short track. He had moved up to 26th place in the first 25 circuits and was biding his time to gain further positions. Despite being one lap behind the leaders, he had moved up to 23rd by lap 60, and by lap 75, he was running 22nd.
He radioed crew chief Steve Plattenberger and the rest of the team that he was loose on departure, that the back end wanted to kick out, and that he required more forward bite out of the turns. For the lap 79 pit break, Plattenberger requested four tyres, gasoline, and a track bar adjustment. Also, credit to the team for gaining one position on pit road, allowing Richardson to restart in 21st place.
The green flag was waved for the lap 82 restart with 17 cars on the lead lap, but Richardson was caught in an accordion effect as cars in front of him slowed instead of accelerating up. This dropped him to 30th place, forcing him to re-pass nearly all of the cars in front of him.
To give credit where credit is due, the quarterback-turned-racecar driver had clawed his way back to 25th by lap 112 and was 24th at the time of the lap 119 caution. When the leaders arrived at pit road, Richardson was radioed to stay out.
As a result, he was able to take advantage of the “wave around” regulation and rejoin the leaders for the lap-125 restart. Richardson came to pit road for fuel, tyres, and an air pressure adjustment after another caution came out one lap later. This positioned him exactly where he wanted to be for the rest of the race, with plenty of gasoline and tyres to last the distance.
Richardson then ran in the 20th through 22nd positions until pitting under caution on lap 166 for tyres, fuel, and final adjustments. Richardson went from 20th to 16th on lap 190 after the green flag was waved on lap 172.
On lap 194, while fighting for 15th place with Joe Nemechek, Richardson collided with Front Row Joe, spinning him out and bringing out the caution. He immediately radioed in saying he had made a mistake and that he would talk to Joe after the race.
As the checkered flag waved, a green-white-checker restart ensued, and Richardson got by a car in front of him to clinch a career-best 15th place — narrowly missing 14th by one foot. The win not only lifted the team’s morale, but also moved them up one spot in the Owner’s Standings to 26th. As the NASCAR Nationwide Series returns to another short track, Iowa Speedway, this weekend, R3 Motorsports is searching for marketing partners.
