Matthew Tyler Musto (born November 27, 1990) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer known professionally as Blackbear (stylized as blackbear). He has five studio albums, six EPs, a mixtape, and two collaborative albums under his belt. With singer-songwriter Mike Posner, Musto is a part of the alternative hip hop/R&B group Mansionz. Musto was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, and spent his childhood in Palm Coast, Florida. His father is a devout Catholic from Italy. He grew interested in music in fourth grade after hearing Rancid, Blink-182, and bands that his babysitter exposed him to, such as New Found Glory and Alkaline Trio.
Musto was the lead singer of the Florida-based rock band Polaroid in high school.garage band, among other things. The band joined to Leakmob Records during Musto’s freshman year of high school. Musto dropped out of high school in the tenth grade to pursue music full-time. Polaroid’s music became increasingly influenced by emo as the band evolved. Musto had also started writing his own solo music by 2008.
Musto began his solo career after leaving Polaroid and moving to Atlanta to collaborate with Ne-Yo. In 2008, he released his first EP, Brightness, which was followed by Contrast in 2009 and Exposure in 2010. In late 2010, he released the Christmas song “I Hate the Holidays” with Tyler Carter of the band Woe, Is Me, followed by a new single, “Douche Bag,” in early January 2011. Musto released the Gone For Good EP and the Year of the Blackbear EP in mid-2011. Musto began using his nickname Blackbear as a pseudonym when he began recording music in the fall of 2011. Mike Posner’s “Marauder Music” was the first song released under the Blackbear pseudonym in November 2011.
Musto co-wrote Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” a Billboard Hot 100 number two hit in early 2012. Musto released his debut EP Foreplay on April 20, 2012, and his debut mixtape Sex on October 31, 2012, with the goal of pursuing a career as an R&B singer. Both albums were released under the moniker Blackbear, and Sex contained contributions from co-writer Mike Posner of “Boyfriend,” as well as producers, singers, and songwriters James Blake and Maejor Ali.
He also made an appearance on MGK’s “End of the Road,” which was released on the Lace Up album on October 9, 2012. Blackbear released The Afterglow EP on April 20, 2014, which landed him at number four on Billboard’s Uncharted list of new artist releases.
Blackbear was one of the first indie artists to monetize SoundCloud streaming in 2014.On February 14, 2015, Blackbear published his first full-length album, Deadroses, a self-distributed collection of ten songs. The album garnered positive feedback, with one reviewer commenting that it “delightfully melded together a wide range of genres, sounds, and emotions to create a truly unified and unique project.”
“idfc,” the album’s debut song, peaked on Billboard’s R&B Hot 100 and remained on the R&B charts for over a year. The song has been streamed millions of times on SoundCloud and Spotify. It has been listened over 22.5 million times on SoundCloud. “idfc” propelled Blackbear into the Billboard top 20.
His song “NYLA” was featured in the Netflix documentary Hot Girls Wanted in May 2015.Following Deadroses came the EP Dead, which comprised acoustic versions of four Deadroses songs as well as one new song, “Weak When Ur Around.”
On November 27, 2015, he released his second full-length album, Help.Drink Bleach, Blackbear’s fourth EP, was released on April 20, 2016, and includes cameos from “Boyfriend” collaborator Mike Posner and American hip-hop recording artist and The HBK Gang co-founder P-Lo.
Throughout the year, Blackbear collaborated with a variety of artists, including Linkin Park, Jacob Sartorius, and Phoebe Ryan of the American rock band Linkin Park. He also toured with Hoodie Allen, who featured Blackbear on his 2016 track and Happy Camper promotional single “Champagne and Pools.” He went on tour with Super Duper Kyle and Tinashe in the middle of the year.Blackbear released his fifth EP, Cashmere Noose, on SoundCloud on August 2, 2016.
A quiet, exhausted voice on the other end of the line says, “The world is changing.” “Like everyone else, I’m trying to get used to it.” Matthew Musto, better known as blackbear, is a 27-year-old producer, vocalist, rapper, and label leader.
Musto’s deft, tattoo-covered frame is where hip-hop, R&B, and EDM merge with Instagram, Snapchat, and luxury couture, and is unassuming in discourse yet artistically and philosophically eye-popping. Culture collides with emotional instability, social anxiety, and self-medication behind his thick eyelids.
Musto, who was born in Pennsylvania, had to adjust to instability from an early age, when he relocated to Florida with his mother and brother, abandoning his heroin-addicted father as a child. He acquired a love to noise and an addiction to attention as he grew up, and by high school, he had signed a record deal with Polaroid, a MySpace-wooing pop-punk band. Musto finally struck out on his own, going to Atlanta, where he was mentored by Ne-Yo, and then to Los Angeles, where he looked for opportunities to create a loud enough setting to suit him. He co-wrote Justin Bieber’s smash song “Boyfriend” with friend and partner Mike Posner in 2012. Musto, who was 21 years old at the time, found himself with more money and a better reputation than he knew what to do with.
On ‘Nevada,’ the first song on his debut EP, ‘Sex,’ Musto sings, “I’m just like my father / I don’t know when enough is enough.” It’s a very personal sentence, and one that would prove to be hauntingly prescient when, in 2016, he was hospitalised due to a life-threatening ailment caused by alcohol and substance misuse, and faced months of extensive therapy. “In the last five years, I’ve undergone nearly every procedure,” Musto admits matter-of-factly. “No one really shines a light on that; instead, they want to dismantle everything else.”
He created much of the content for his first studio album, ‘Digital Druglord,’ while in critical care, and the experience inspired him to “work harder and make up for all the time that I’ve wasted laying in a hospital bed.” This would be reflected in his work ethic, as blackbear released a second album, ‘cybersex,’ as well as a joint album with Mike Posner as Mansionz, in the same year.
Last November 27th, Musto’s birthday, the full album ‘cybersex’ was released in its entirety. The project’s art direction, driven by Musto himself, plays with ideas of Internet escapism and augmented reality, while the songs’ subjects alternate between meditations on materialism and confessional memorandums of a lifestyle that has taken its toll.
compose songs.” 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Cam’ron, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Tinashe, and Houston legends Paul Wall and Riff Raff are among a brilliant list of contributions who juxtapose their own passionate individualism with blackbear’s unique ability to make braggadocious descriptions of high-end Italian bedspreads sound deep.
“Some of the individuals I’m working with right now are ten years my junior and compose music in a completely different way than I do.” They’re the ones that keep me inspired right now,” he adds as the talk winds down, smart but sluggish, as if longing to return to the comfort of his LA studio.
Musto was born to create: the hair dye, slogans on his T-shirt, and symbols and writings adorning his body recall the times in his life when music wasn’t his primary mode of expression. He’s a switchboard, plugged into the millennial condition, with data streams pouring through him from one end of the cultural spectrum to the other. There’s a link between blackbear and blackbear.
Blackbear (aka Matthew Musto), a US R&B auteur, makes lonely, melancholic, and nihilistic music for the digital era, yet he’s also a humorous guy. Musto agrees to a rare interview via Zoom from Los Angeles, but demands that it be audio-only. He quips about looking “ratchet” in quarantine, but he’s no brat.
Musto is now a multi-faceted phenomenon who performs as a singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer, but even his devoted fans, known as ‘cubs,’ believe he is underappreciated. As a result, he approached his new album, Everything Means Nothing, which was released in two parts, as a bold pop endeavour to rival The Weeknd’s post-Starboy work.
Musto, a working-class Florida native, began his career as the frontman of the popular emo-punk band Polaroid when he was in high school. After that, he went solo and apprenticed with Ne-Yo in Atlanta. Before evolving into blackbear, the cloud rap crooner, Musto made music under his own name. Ironically, it was as a co-writer on Justin Bieber’s 2012 blockbuster “Boyfriend” with colleague (and later mansionz partner) Mike Posner that he got his break.
