Emma Lee Bunton is an English singer, songwriter, media personality, and actress who was born on January 21, 1976. She rose to prominence in the 1990s as a member of the Spice Girls, where she was dubbed “Baby Spice.” The quartet became the best-selling female group of all time with over 100 million albums sold worldwide[3].

Bunton released her debut solo album, A Girl Like Me (2001), during the Spice Girls’ sabbatical, which debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold.

The album produced the number one hit “What Took You So Long?” as well as the top five songs “What I Am” and “Take My Breath Away,” as well as the top 20 single “We’re Not Gonna Sleep Tonight.” “Free Me,” “Maybe,” “I’ll Be There,” and “Crickets Sing for Anamaria” were among the singles from her second studio album, Free Me (2004). Bunton returned with the Spice Girls for a one-off international tour and greatest hits album in 2007, following the release of her third studio album, Life in Mono (2006). She has been reunited with Geri Halliwell, Melanie C, and Mel B as the Spice Girls since 2018. Bunton’s fourth studio album, My Happy Place, was released in 2019.

Bunton has appeared on television in a variety of roles, including a recurring role on the BBC One comedy series Absolutely Fabulous (2003–2012), a contestant on the fourth series of the BBC dancing competition show Strictly Come Dancing, and a judge on the ITV celebrity skating show Dancing on Ice (2010–2011) and the entertainment series Your Face Sounds Familiar (2013). She was a radio broadcaster on the Heart Breakfast Show in London alongside Jamie Theakston from 2013 to 2018, as well as hosting her own show on Sunday evenings.

Bunton was born in the London borough of Finchley, Barnet.  When she was 11, her parents, Pauline, a karate instructor, and Trevor Bunton, a milkman, divorced, and she moved in with her mother. . Bunton’s maternal family comes from County Wexford, Republic of Ireland, according to a TV interview with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on This Morning in August 2016. Bunton attended Finchley’s St Theresa’s Roman Catholic Primary School. Sylvia Young Theatre School was where she enrolled. She met Keeley Hawes at the SYTS and the two lived and travelled together for six months. Bunton made a brief appearance as a mugger in the BBC soap series EastEnders in 1992.  She made a brief appearance as a prostitute in the BBC drama series To Play the King, and she appeared in the ITV police thriller The Bill in 1993.

Bunton also starred in a British government public awareness film about fireworks safety. Melanie Chisholm, Mel Brown, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham all responded to an ad in The Stage in 1994.  Around 400 ladies responded to the ad and visited the Dance Works studios. Halliwell, Chisholm, Beckham (née Adams), and Brown were the founding members of the group, along with Michelle Stephenson, who was replaced by Abigail Kis, then Bunton, due to her lack of dedication. The lack of a contract made the group feel uneasy, and they were irritated by the direction in which Heart Management was leading them.

The trio began touring management firms in October 1994, armed with a repertoire of demos and dance routines. They persuaded Bob Herbert to arrange a showcase performance for the group in December 1994 at the Nomis Studios in Shepherd’s Bush in front of industry writers, producers, and A&R men, to which they received a “overwhelmingly favourable” response. The Herberts soon set about developing a binding contract for the group due to the high level of interest. Encouraged by the positive response they received during the Nomis presentation, all five members postponed signing contracts, citing legal counsel from Adams’ father, Anthony Adams, among others. The group broke ways with Heart Management in March 1995, frustrated by their management’s refusal to listen to its ideals and ideas.

The Spice Girls released their debut song “Wannabe” in the United Kingdom on July 8, 1996. The video for “Wannabe” was given a trial run on The Box music channel in the weeks preceding up to the release.

and became the best-selling single by an all-female ensemble of all time. From their albums Spice, Spiceworld, and Forever, they went on to have nine more number-one singles. The media gave each member of the group a moniker. “Baby Spice” was given to Bunton.

“Say You’ll Be There,” “2 Become 1,” “Who Do You Think You Are,” and “Mama” from Spice, as well as “Spice Up Your Life,” “Too Much,” “Stop,” and “Viva Forever” from Spiceworld, were all hit singles.

She hosted Emma on VH1 in 1999.  She sang background vocals on Melanie B’s song “Sophisticated Lady,” which was released as a B-side to her single “Word Up,” and she recorded “(Hey You) Free Up Your Mind” for the film Pokémon: The First Movie. The Spice Girls ceased recording in 2000, after the release of their comeback single, a double A-side of “Holler”/”Let Love Lead The Way,” and their third studio album, Forever, which reached at number two in the UK, and decided to focus on their separate careers for the time being.

A Girl Like Me, Bunton’s debut solo album, was released in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2001 by Virgin Records. With 21,500 copies sold in its first week, the album debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart.  The album’s first song, “What Took You So Long?” debuted at the top of the UK Singles Chart. Despite its initial success, A Girl Like Me swiftly dropped off the charts. However, the album’s top five single “Take My Breath Away” and top twenty single “We’re Not Gonna Sleep Tonight” kept it on the UK Albums Chart for several weeks. A Girl Like Me was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) on September 7, 2001, for sales of over 100,000 copies, making it the 147th best-selling album in the United Kingdom in 2001.  In the United Kingdom, the album sold 125,000 copies. Bunton signed a new deal with 19 Recordings, owned by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, to release her second album, Free Me, on February 9, 2004, after parting ways with Virgin. Mike Peden and Yak Bondy produced the majority of the record. Cathy Dennis, Henry Binns, and Puerto Rican vocalist Luis Fonsi all contributed to the record. The album was well praised by critics for its “charm and grace,” which was inspired by Motown and the 1960s era.It was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry after debuting at number seven on the UK Albums Chart and lasting over twelve weeks inside the top ten (BPI). In the United Kingdom, the album had three top five singles – the title track, “Maybe,” and “I’ll Be There” – as well as a top twenty song, “Crickets Sing for Anamaria.”  Both “Free Me” and “Maybe” were dance club favourites in the United States, reaching number four and six on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, respectively. Bunton was a participant on the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing in October 2006, partnering with Darren Bennett. She made it to the semi-finals and finished third. Bunton sang Petula Clark’s 1960s song “Downtown” for a charity single for the BBC Children in Need appeal on November 13, 2006. It was followed by her third studio album, Life in Mono, which debuted at number three on the UK Singles Chart. Life in Mono, like her last album, dabbled with 1960s pop music influences.

The musical arrangement for this album was more oriented toward 1960s French pop music, with some elements of British 1960s pop and Motown thrown in for good measure. The album was Bunton’s first to fail to crack the top ten in the UK, peaking at number 65 on the albums chart. The album’s second single, “All I Need to Know,” was released on February 12, 2007, in time for Valentine’s Day. Bunton recorded the video in the week leading up to Christmas 2006 in East London’s Old Street.  “All I Need to Know,” which debuted at number 60 on the UK Singles Chart, was Bunton’s lowest-charting single throughout his solo career.

The Spice Girls reunited in 2007 and announced intentions to tour as a quintet for the final time for a show called The Return of the Spice Girls, for which they were believed to have earned £10 million each (about $20 million).

The members of the team stated that they still like performing their “own thing.” The band decided to put out their first compilation album, which featured a collection of their greatest hits. The tour began on December 2, 2007, after the album was released in early November 2007.
