178, on the verge of 200. Man, that’s a gold mine. And, in today’s society, where things don’t just go platinum, I believe 200 signifies a lot more. It’s quite uncommon — at least in the United States. What do you call platinum in this part of the world? I’m not sure. But it’s a lot less than in the United States. Because platinum in New Zealand is 15000 copies and gold is 7500, I’m like, “We would’ve gone platinum ten times!” We’d have done it!We bet the house a few times and kept doing it in order to get to this point, to be able to make the big gamble, and that’s what this record was about. We’d saved about a hundred thousand dollars from performances and iTunes money from the last album – because it was all self-released and self-produced – and we bet it on this one. Making the music videos, recording, and creating the artwork was genuinely a team effort, and for it to work, it’s like ‘phew, maybe we weren’t insane after all.’ How many more CDs did you sell than you did at Top Dog? Ahhh (laughs) I think I sold maybe 100-150 books in the two years I was there.

“Hey you jerk, I need you to sell my food, not your rap music!” I’d say. But, nah, it was a really great shop that looked after me. What made These Things Happen so much more effective than Must Be Nice, in your opinion? There are many elements that play into that, from timing to, I mean, a kid may record a masterpiece tomorrow, but what good will it do if he doesn’t have an audience? As a result, the work’s quality isn’t everything. Despite the fact that we killed ourselves working on this record for a year and a half, going back and modifying it, adding more, taking away more, and adding more. We poured our hearts, sweat, and tears into this song, but we knew it wouldn’t be enough in the end. It wouldn’t reach the correct audience, have the right impact, or mean anything if it didn’t have the right set up. So you believe it was simply due to a greater audience?

Yes, and when this album was released, the dues were paid. We’d done a half-dozen tours and travelled across the country, releasing a lot of music and music videos. There was a foundation and a following in place, so it didn’t fall on deaf ears, and it was accepted by an audience that was ready and waiting for it. So you have this organically grown fan base that is waiting for that moment, and they believe you are capable of providing a body of work that means something, but then you have to deliver, and hope that they appreciate it, speak about it, and experience it. That record, as much as it was a single moment, was also a turning point.

How long have you been promoting the album on the road? We’d been on the road promoting the album even before it was out. So we started this tour in February of last year, five months before the album came out, and I was playing some of the music at the shows as a campaign trail, telling everyone every night, ‘there’s this new music you can only hear at the show, the record’s coming out in June,’ and so on, campaigning and promoting it. And we haven’t taken a break from touring this year. I may get two or three days at home every now and then, but we’ve been on the road for almost a year.

How has your live show progressed?Man, It’s kind of like this: you do it over and over again, and our team’s culture is built on a foundation of constructive criticism. We’re all hard on each other and naturally push each other to improve. If you do the same trick every night, you will polish it and become better at it. I have a lot of fun on stage, and I think the show has come a long way, and I want to give people an experience, but, like a super hero with his abilities, I’ve got this production, my entire staff, my two tour buses, and my sound guys, and I’m in a large massive hall in the United States. It’s similar to where we were a few tours ago in the United States, where the venues are smaller and there isn’t enough room for a large show. You’re working with sound engineers you’ve never met before, but you make it work.
