Linda Eder ( born February 3, 1961) is an actress and singer from the United States. She made her Broadway debut in the musical Jekyll & Hyde, playing Lucy Harris, for which she received a Drama Desk Award nomination. Eder has played at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Radio City Musical Hall across the country. In 2018, she released her 18th solo album. Eder was born on February 3, 1961, in Tucson, Arizona, and reared in Brainerd, Minnesota. Georg (from Austria) and Laila (from Norway), her parents, introduced her to music at a young age. Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Eileen Farrell were among her early idols.

Garland, in particular, has had a big influence on Eder. Her first musical theatre role was in a high school production of The Sound of Music as the Mother Abbess. Eder finished fourth in the Miss Minnesota Pageant in 1980. Eder began her career on Broadway by singing in Minneapolis bars and at Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She won the talent show Star Search in 1988, and Frank Wildhorn was impressed by her performance. She signed with RCA Records and appeared in two productions of Wildhorn’s musical Svengali in 1991 (the 1990 world premiere and the 1995–96 national tour), the 1997 Broadway production

Eder made many CDs for Angel Records and Atlantic Records around that time. Wildhorn and Eder married in 1998and divorced in 2004; their son, Jake, is their only child. In Jekyll & Hyde, Eder won the Theater World Award for Best Broadway Debut in 1996–97.

Rosie O’Donnell and Kathie Lee Gifford, two talk show hosts in the audience that night, saw her during her maiden solo concert at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall. She went on to appear on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, and David Letterman’s Late Show.

She sang the song “Anything Can Happen,” which was written for the musical Wonderland: Alice’s New Musical Adventure. Eder’s major theatrical career began in 1987, when she auditioned in Florida in front of musical theatre composer Frank Wildhorn for the leading role of Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde. Her vocal abilities were so impressive that she was cast right away, despite the fact that no production was scheduled at the time. Linda has also done Christmas shows at the Palace and Gershwin theatres on Broadway.

The programme was extended numerous times, and Eder’s performance was praised. Following this success, Wildhorn debuted Svengali, a musical starring his two leading Jekyll actors, Linda and Chuck Wagner. In 1991, the musical was also performed at the Asolo Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. She then took part in many workshops for The Scarlet Pimpernel, as Marguerite St. Just and featured on the concept album. After many workshops with Jekyll & Hyde, she was recast as Lucy in 1995, alongside Robert Cuccioli and Christiane Noll. The performance was remounted at Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars before being transferred to Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. Following these two successful runs, Eder’s headlining role as Lucy toured the country from Fall 1995 to Spring 1996, with a tentative Broadway debut in Spring 1996.

The show, however, was postponed. When previews finally began in March 1997, more members of the creative team were added. With the move came the cancellation of Lucy’s first big hit, “Bring on the Men.” Despite speculations to the contrary, Eder has stated that director/choreographer/scenic designer Robin Phillips was the one who eliminated the song, which was not just one of her favourites but also a fan favourite. She has, nevertheless, praised him, primarily for the acting guidance he provided her.

She was nominated for the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for her debut performance in 1997, and she received the Theatre World Award. Regis Philbin and Rosie O’Donnell, both of whom had featured Eder (and Frank Wildhorn and his other musicals) on their respective shows multiple times, thought she had been robbed of a Tony Award nomination. Eder married Wildhorn while on Broadway and formally divorced him on August 30, 1998. Luba Mason took her place. Eder quit Jekyll to have a family, but he accepted to be cast in a limited run of Wildhorn’s musical tapestry The Civil War, which premiered in Houston.

Eder took part in a number of Wildhorn seminars and demo recordings. Most notably, she contributed to his Wonderland: Alice’s New Musical Adventure (previously known as Alice), which had its world premiere ten years after the first single (“Anything Can Happen”) was released, Havana (for which she wrote the title song and several others), Bonnie & Clyde: A New Musical (which was to recently star Brandi Burkhardt, but is now Laura Osnes, and which had its world premiere ten years after the first single (“Anything Can Happen”) was

In 2003, Eder made his next musical appearance in Camille Claudel. At the Goodspeed Opera House, she played the part. Despite conflicting reviews for the concert, which was presented in a chamber-style format, Eder regained a lot of attention. It was presented at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2004. However, the show has yet to be realised on a large scale, despite plans for multiple European productions and a 2011 Japanese debut.

Her CD The Other Side of Me, which was released on September 30, 2008, has a pop/country vibe to it. This is a change from her usual approach, which consists of standards and ballads. “It took a year and a half to make my new CD, the other side of myself,” Eder writes on her official website, “but in truth, it has been a lifetime in the making.”

She continues, saying:I was a gifted but sloppy piano student as a child. As a result, the upright piano was left behind during one of our early moves. I bought an inexpensive acoustic guitar when I was a teenager so that I could accompany my inner poet. What I composed in those early years, as well as the voice I used to sing, were the most authentic expressions of who I am today. There were no external forces to colour, shape, or steer the vowels or emotions. There were no previous performances to compare myself to; all I had were my own words, my own history, and my own voice. I’ve now been granted the opportunity to remove the disguise and sing without the presence of other people’s voices in my thoughts. I’ve been on a long journey to find my way back home, and I’ve finally arrived. My voice is The Other Side of Me.
