Shyamalan was born in the Indian town of Mahé, which is part of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Dr. Nelliyattu C. Shyamalan, a Malayali neurologist from Mahé and a JIPMER graduate, is the son of Indian parents, and his mother.
When Shyamalan was six weeks old, his parents moved to the United States. Shyamalan grew up in the Pennsylvania town of Penn Valley. Shyamalan grew up in a Hindu household. He attended Waldron Mercy Academy, a private Roman Catholic grammar school, and then the Episcopal Academy, a private Episcopal secondary school in Merion Station, Pennsylvania. He felt like an outsider, and he recalls professors telling him that anyone who was not baptised would go to hell. A teacher once became enraged because he “earned the top grade and [he] wasn’t Catholic” when he was a student there[where?].Shyamalan was a National Merit Scholar and received the New York University Merit Scholarship in 1988. Shyamalan attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in Manhattan, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1992. He chose “Night” as his second name while he was a student there.
When Shyamalan was handed a Super 8 camera as a child, he knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. His father wanted him to continue in the family medical practise, but his mother urged him to pursue his love. He had made forty-five home movies by the time he was seventeen. He has put a scene from one of these childhood movies on each DVD release of his films, beginning with The Sixth Sense and ending with Lady in the Water, which he believes represents his first attempt at the same kind of film.
While still a student at NYU, Shyamalan filmed his debut film, the semi-autobiographical drama Praying with Anger, with money borrowed from family and friends.
Wide Awake, his second film, was written and directed by him. His parents were associate producers on the film. The storey revolved around a ten-year-old Catholic youngster (Joseph Cross) who looks for God after his grandfather (Robert Loggia) dies. Wide Awake received 1999 Young Artist Award nominations for Best Drama and Best Performance for Cross, and was filmed in a school Shyamalan attended as a child. The film only had a limited distribution and grossed $305,704 in theatres, despite a $6 million budget.
In the same year, Shyamalan collaborated with Greg Brooker on the screenplay for Stuart Little. He stated in 2013 that he was the ghostwriter for the 1999 adolescent comedy She’s All That, starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook. Both Shyamalan and R. Lee Fleming, Jr. contributed to the script, according to Jack Lechner (who served as Miramax’s chief of development in the late 1990s): Shyamalan completed an uncredited rewrite (doing more than “a polish”) that got the film green-lit, while Fleming created the original script that Miramax bought. Content from both writers was incorporated in the final version of the film, according to Lechner.
M. Night Shyamalan Biography/Wiki
BIOGRAPHY:
Shyamalan rose to prominence after writing and directing The Sixth Sense in 1999, which went on to become the second-highest grossing horror film of all time.Six Academy Award nominations were made for The Sixth Sense, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
This would have allowed Shyamalan to collaborate with his longtime hero. After the picture was cancelled, Shyamalan later admitted that it was too “tricky” to put together and that it was “not the right thing” for him to do.
Following The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan wrote and directed Unbreakable, which was released in 2000. It was both critically and monetarily successful as a covert comic book movie within a thriller.
Shyamalan’s name was tied to the 2001 picture Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but the creation of Unbreakable clashed with it. While on press tours for Lady in the Water in July 2006, Shyamalan expressed interest in directing one of the next two Harry Potter films, saying, “The concepts that flow through it… the empowering of children, a good perspective… you name it, it comes in accordance with my beliefs.” “It’s funny, which I like. When I initially read Harry Potter and considered creating it, I had a completely different vision of it “..
Signs, a film in which he also played Ray Reddy, was released in 2002. It was about a guy regaining his faith in God in the face of an alien invasion. It was a critical and financial success, grossing $408 million on a $72 million budget.
The Village was his next film (2004). It was about a small, isolated hamlet in the woods. Despite receiving poor reviews, it was a commercial triumph, grossing $257 million on a $60 million budget. Shyamalan had been developing a cinematic version of Yann Martel’s novel Life of Pi with 20th Century Fox after the premiere of The Village in 2004, but dropped out to focus on Lady in the Water. “That is a fantastic book. “But I was cautious because the book’s ending is a bit of a surprise. And I was worried that after you signed it with my name, everyone would have a different experience. I believe it would be lot more satisfying if someone else performed it. You must be mindful of your expectations.
I’m hoping they make a lovely film “.. Lady in the Water, a bedtime storey about a water nymph and an apartment superintendent, was critically and financially unsuccessful when it was released in 2006. It was critically panned yet financially successful, grossing $163 million on a $48 million budget. He directed The Last Airbender in 2010, which was based on the Nickelodeon TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender’s first season. It was critically panned, with many critics pointing to the casting of white actors in Asian and Native American-inspired roles, but it was a commercial success, grossing $319 million on a $150 million budget.
Shyamalan revealed in July 2008 that he has formed a production business named Night Chronicles with Media Rights Capital. For the next three years, Shyamalan would produce but not direct one film per year. Devil, a supernatural thriller directed by brothers John and Drew Dowdle, was the first of the three films. Brian Nelson wrote the script, which was based on a concept by M. Night Shyamalan. Chris Messina starred in the film, which was about a group of individuals trapped in an elevator with the devil. Critics were not given a chance to see the picture before it was released.
After Earth, based on a script by Gary Whitta and starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, was directed by Shyamalan in 2013. It earned mixed reviews from reviewers and was a commercial failure. In 2013, Shyamalan defined his thoughts as “filled with doubts, contemplation, and inquiry.”
