Following this year’s No. 1 album, the Memphis rapper has his sights set on movie roles and executive positions.

Moneybagg Yo is finally getting his flowers after over a decade in hip-hop, 20 projects, and 12 gold and platinum certifications. A Gangsta’s Pain, his fourth studio album, was released in April and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart twice in May. The smash track “Time Today” is the driving force behind the album. Bagg’s second week at No. 1 was secured after he was able to dethrone DJ Khaled’s Khaled Khaled LP from the top spot. In a time when hip-hop is still suffering from the pandemic’s impacts, with no touring and restricted gigs, the 29-year-old artist recognises the blessing he’s received with this achievement.

With his recent albums, Bagg, who signed to Yo Gotti’s CMG label and Interscope Records in 2016, has a proven track record of success. The Memphis native has been on a roll in the lead-up to his record for the past year and a half. Now, DeMario DeWayne White Jr., the respected rhymer, is concentrating on his upcoming A Gangsta’s Pain deluxe album, which will feature Lil Durk, Pooh Shiesty, and EST Gee, among others. Following the release of the album this summer, he’ll release I Stamped That, a mixtape showcasing artists from his own indie label, Bread Gang.

Bagg, who is clad in a Gallery Dept. grey sweatsuit with a black fitting cap to the back, is in excellent spirits on a sunny afternoon in May. The Bread Gang leader opens up about his No. 1 album, the information he’s received from Yo Gotti, making life decisions, the artists on his burgeoning label roster, and why he doesn’t want his kids to follow in his rap footsteps while riding in the backseat of a black SUV in New York City.

What’s it like to have your record A Gangsta’s Pain debut at No. 1 twice in the same month?

Moneybagg Yo: It makes me happy. It’s difficult to do that twice in a year. That’s a good thing. This is my day-to-day existence. This is similar to how, without music, I feel like I’m nothing, you understand? Like myself, I have a strong desire to succeed in this game. That drive remains in my possession. It took me about a year to complete A Gangsta’s Pain. Because I needed to survive. I had to go through everything. I had to constantly reminding myself that I, too, am a human being.

You said in your album song “FR”: “Forgive me if you met me on them Percs, those were the worst days.” Why did you want to bring it up throughout the song?

Because, you know, I was just… You were irritated by it. Wockesha can do it on occasion. It can make you irritated, but that’s why I say, I believe that when people do that, they should do the drug, not allow the drug do them. As a result, I believe I simply use it to the best of my capacity. I’m not a dog walker. That is not something I do.

What made you decide to quit using Percs?Oh, this is affecting me in this way? I just wanted to be more disciplined with my lifestyle and, Oh, this is impacting me in this way? I’m going to get rid of this. I’m going to stop because this isn’t working. I’d like to take action. I want to be like this, so I’ll have to work hard to achieve it. Discipline is exactly what it is.

How has your life changed since joining forces with Yo Gotti and Interscope? It’s drastically changed. I’m shifting my focus to movies, apparel, and [the] real estate market. Plain timepieces have a certain value to me. In addition, I’m attempting to strike a balance between my personal and professional lives. I’ve arrived at that moment. Because you have to make time for your family. You have to try to fit it in some way and strike a balance. Right now, that’s where I’m at.

Moneybagg Yo Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

What have you learned from Gotti? He put me in the real estate game and made me wave simple watches. He included me in the entire wave. And then, you know, someone said to me, and it’s always resonated with me since the first time I signed with him, that it’s all about chasing your ambitions, then going for the money. Or you don’t even try to make money. You pursue your aspirations, and you’ll be able to keep track of all the money that comes your way. That made an impression on me.

How do you strike a balance between being an artist and launching your label, Bread Gang? You get a better understanding of people’s struggles when you do that. I understand what they’re going through and what they’re going through. At the same time, I believe you must have personnel in place. You have to start someplace while you’re building up.

So, I’m not going to launch a label after I’m done rapping…I’m going to make a label when you’re done rapping. No. You must proceed and prepare; you must butter it up. You must prepare it to become the world’s most recognisable brand. That, I believe, is what I’m attempting with Bread Gang.

What are you doing to make it taste better?I’ve got artists like Big30 and TripStar, as well as artists like pressure. I’ve got an R&B vocalist I’m getting ready to unleash as well. I think it’s a good idea to pull them around while I’m hot. Just like [Lil] Wayne did with Nicki [Minaj] and Drake. He was still on his way, and he was taking them with him. That is how we go about it.

When it comes to signing people to your label, what do you look for?First and foremost, you must pay attention. You have the ability. It’s great that everyone has skill, but becoming a successful celebrity requires more. You have to be able to listen and accept constructive criticism and other things like that, you understand? You simply must arrive on time. That’s something I’m learning as well.

What can you tell us about your upcoming movie role?Yeah. I’ll be releasing a short film soon. I’d like to put it out alongside the deluxe [record]. I’m a performer. I’ve been wanting to release this film, and now it feels like the right time. It doesn’t seem to be happening when I’d like it to. It’s starting to come together more now, because I feel like the timing is preparing itself, and now is when it’ll happen.
