DeAndre Cortez Way (born July 28, 1990), better known by his stage name Soulja Boy (formerly Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em), is a rapper and record producer from the United States. His debut single “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 2007. Starting in September 2007, the single was self-published on the internet and went on to become a number-one hit in the United States for seven non-consecutive weeks. Way was ranked number 18 on Forbes’ list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings of 2010 on August 17, after earning $7 million in 2010. Way was born in Chicago and moved to Atlanta when he was six years old,where he discovered rap music. With his father, he moved to Batesville, Mississippi, when he was 14 years old.

Way’s father set up a recording studio for him to pursue his musical dreams.Way uploaded his songs to the SoundClick website in November 2005. Way also recorded “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” in March 2007, which was followed by a low-budget video demonstrating the “Crank That” dance. By the end of the month, it had gained its first airing, and Way had met with Mr. Collipark to sign a deal with Interscope Records.

“Crank That” was featured in the television show Entourage on August 12th, and on September 1st, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot RingMasters charts in the United States. According to reports, the album was recorded entirely on FL Studio’s demo version. Allmusic gave Souljaboytellem.com a positive review, however other publications, including as Entertainment Weekly, gave it mostly poor reviews. Several critics hailed Soulja Boy with starting a new hip-hop movement, while predicting that he would be a one-hit wonder.

Chris Brown had been Way’s initial pick for the hook, but he had politely declined the offer. Way then attempted to recreate it on his own using Auto-Tune, but he found the results unsatisfactory. It became his second single to surpass the two million download mark in the United States, selling over 2 million digital copies.  Way released his third song, “Turn My Swag On,” on January 26, 2009. It debuted at number one on the US Rap Charts and reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. It had sold over 1 million digital downloads in the United States as of August 23, 2009.

The DeAndre Way, Way’s third studio album, was supposed to be his most personal and successful to date. He expressed interest in working with artists such as Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Eminem when asked about possible collaborations. The album’s lead single, “POW,” was released in January 2009 but failed to chart and was labelled a promotional single. Way released three mixtapes on October 30, 2009: Paranormal Activity, Dat Piff, and Cortez.

The album’s first single, “All Black Everything,” was announced on February 18, 2010, but the single was cancelled, and the music was included in another promotional mixtape, Legendary. In an early 2010 commercial, the album’s title was changed to Dre, and a video preview for “Do It Big” was released as the first single, however it was also cancelled. The album’s official lead song, “Pretty Boy Swag,” was released on June 8, 2010. Way said in September 2011 that he is working on a new album called Promise, which would be released in October.  Way also revealed the cover and title of his second independent album, Skate Boy, on Twitter, along with the announcement that it would be released on November 1 in shops.  Way released his mixtape Supreme on September 19th. Skate Boy (Deluxe Edition) was released as a mixtape rather than an album on October 30.  Way released a new mixtape, Gold On Deck, on December 30, 2011.

Way continued to produce mixtapes in 2012, despite the fact that his album was still on hold. Way released 50/13, a mixtape for the start of the year, on January 9th, with a cover based on ASAP Rocky’s mixtape Live. Love. Way released his OBEY mixtape on March 23, which included the promotional single “Too Faded.” Way spoke about his new album Promise on June 3, 2012, and said that he has released so many mixtapes in the last two years because he feels he has to put out as much music as possible in order to be as creative as possible. Way released Double Cup City, a joint mixtape with rapper Vinny Chase, on June 11th.  Way released the follow-up mixtape Juice II on September 4, in which he returned to his former producing style with the opening words “Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em.” Way’s mixtape has the most downloads.  On November 6, he released his mixtape Young & Flexin.
