Chancelor Johnathan Bennett (born April 16, 1993) is an American rapper, singer, and record producer best known by his stage name Chance the Rapper.

Chance the Rapper was born in Chicago and released his first mixtape, 10 Day, in 2012. After releasing his second mixtape, Acid Rap, in 2013, he began to garner popular notoriety. In 2016, he released Coloring Book, his third mixtape, which received even more critical acclaim and attention. It won him three Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album; it was the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy Award, and it peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 after its release.  In 2019, he released his first studio album, The Big Day.

Bennett became interested in hip-hop after hearing Kanye West’s “Through the Wire” on the radio while walking through Hyde Park in Chicago. Bennett believes West to be a significant influence on him, and he has stated that West motivated him to start rapping. Bennett and West met at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in August 2014.

Some of his teachers at Jones College Prep High School mocked his ambitions to be a musician. Bennett recorded his first full-length effort, a mixtape titled 10 Day (also known as #10Day), in early 2011 during his senior year, following a 10-day suspension for marijuana use on school.  He announced his 10 Day project and released a song called “Windows” in December 2011.  Bennett was named one of Complex magazine’s “10 New Chicago Rappers to Watch Out For” in February 2012.  “I spent almost eight months recording, writing, and forging relationships off of the hunger to put something out,” Bennett recalls.

Bennett published the mixtape on April 3, 2012, and it has since been downloaded over 500,000 times through the DatPiff website. Bennett was able to develop contacts with producers like Chuck Inglish, Kenny Jame$, and Blended Babies thanks to the mixtape.  Forbes magazine took notice of the mixtape, and it was included in the publication’s Cheap Tunes column. Bennett had an appearance on the single “They Don’t Like Me” on Childish Gambino’s sixth mixtape, Royalty, in July 2012. Bennett would later be asked to join Gambino on his first North American concert tour as his opening act.  In 2013, Chance the Rapper performed. Bennett’s second mixtape, Acid Rap, was published via DatPiff on April 30, 2013. Over 1.5 million people have downloaded the song.

Twista, Vic Mensa, Saba, BJ the Chicago Kid, Action Bronson, Childish Gambino, and Ab-Soul all made cameo appearances on Bennett’s album.  Critics praised Acid Rap’s performance.  The mixtape has an average score of 86 from 21 critics on Metacritic, indicating “universal acclaim.” At the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards, it was nominated for Best Mixtape.
