BIOGRAPHY:

He got offers to play professional sports with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL, the San Diego Chargers in the AFL, and the Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Baseball despite going undrafted after graduation.

Reeves joined with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 1965 to play safety, but after a series of injuries limited the team’s depth during training camp, he was shifted to halfback. He spent most of his first season on the kickoff and punt units.

Tom Landry transferred All-Pro safety Mel Renfro to offence in 1966, searching for additional speed at running back. Renfro was injured in the team’s first game against the New York Giants, and Reeves took advantage of his chance to play by having a breakout season, not only leading the team in rushing (757 yards), but also in pass receiving (757 yards) and scoring (96 points). He had almost 1300 total yards, was sixth in the NFL in rushing, first in touchdowns, and sixth in scoring, and set a Cowboys record with 16 touchdowns (8 rushing and 8 receiving).

At the end of the season, he was named to The Sporting News All-Pro team. Reeves finished the season as the NFL’s sixth-leading rusher. In 1966, Reeves’ performance allowed the Cowboys to relieve part of the rushing strain on fullback Don Perkins, allowing them to reach their first championship game.

He had back-to-back seasons of over 600 yards in 1967, and he was the Cowboys’ second-leading runner with 603 yards and third-leading receiver with 490 yards. He scored a touchdown run, a touchdown reception, and a touchdown pass in the same game against the Philadelphia Eagles in week 13. In a game against the Atlanta Falcons, he also set a team record by scoring four touchdowns.

He developed into a multi-talented athlete and demonstrated the ability to routinely produce huge plays during the first half of his NFL career.

He was a starter until week four of the 1968 season, when he tore his right knee and was forced to retire. That knee injury limited his powers and hindered him for the rest of his playing career.

Because of his injuries, Tom Landry began playing him in different areas and requested him to become a player coach, allowing Calvin Hill and Duane Thomas more playing time. He did that for three years, until he retired at the end of the 1972 season to become a full-time assistant coach.

With the Dallas Cowboys for eight seasons, Reeves amassed 1,990 rushing yards, 1,693 receiving yards, and 42 touchdowns.Reeves threw a touchdown pass in the Cowboys’ loss to the Green Bay Packers in the legendary Ice Bowl.

The Cowboys made the playoffs every year throughout Reeves’ playing career, reaching the Super Bowl twice and winning Super Bowl VI by a score of 24-3 over the Miami Dolphins following the 1971 season. Dan Reeves let a throw slip between his hands in Super Bowl V, with the Cowboys and Colts tied at 13 in the last two minutes, setting up the Colts in Dallas territory. With 5 seconds left, Jim O’Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal to give the Colts the victory.
