Keanu Charles Reeves, who was born in Beirut and raised in Toronto, began his acting career in theatre and television before making his feature film debut in Youngblood (1986). Keanu On September 2, 1964, Charles Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, to Patricia (née Taylor), a costume designer and actor, and Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr. His mother is an Essex-born Englishwoman. His American father is of Native Hawaiian, Chinese, English, Irish, and Portuguese ancestry and hails from Hawaii. His Hawaiian grandmother is Chinese. His mother met his father while working in Beirut,who eventually abandoned his wife and children when Reeves was three years old. When Reeves was 13, he last saw his father on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

His mother took the family to Sydney, Australia, when his parents separated in 1966, and subsequently to New York City, where she married Paul Aaron, a Broadway and Hollywood director, in 1970.

The couple split in 1971 after relocating to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Reeves took part in a Damn Yankees theatre production when he was nine years old. Aaron remained close to Reeves, giving him guidance and suggesting him for a job at Pennsylvania’s Hedgerow Theater.

In 1976, Reeves’ mother married rock music promoter Robert Miller; the pair separated in 1980. Her fourth spouse, a hairdresser called Jack Bond, was her fourth husband, and they were married until 1994. Reeves and his sisters grew raised mostly in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood, where they were frequently cared for by a nanny.  He grew up surrounded by Chinese art, furnishings, and cuisine as a result of his grandmother’s ethnicity. Reeves grew up watching British comic shows like The Two Ronnies, and his mother instilled in him English politeness that he has kept throughout his life.

Reeves, who described himself as a “private kid,” went to four different high schools, including the Etobicoke School of the Arts, where he was expelled. Reeves claimed he was kicked out because he was “just a little bit boisterous and fired my mouth off once in a while… I wasn’t the most well-oiled machine in the school.”  He was a good ice hockey goaltender at De La Salle College. When he was 15, Reeves decided to become an actor instead of pursuing his dream of becoming a professional ice hockey player for the Canadian Olympic team.

He attended Avondale Secondary Alternative School after leaving De La Salle College, which allowed him to continue his schooling while working as an actor. When he was 17, he dropped out of high school. He came to Los Angeles three years later after obtaining a green card through his American stepfather. By naturalisation, Reeves has become a Canadian citizen.  He made his acting debut in an episode of the television series Hangin’ In the same year. In 1985, he played Mercutio in the Leah Posluns Theatre in North York, Ontario, in a stage performance of Romeo and Juliet.

Despite mixed reviews for the latter, Variety magazine lauded Reeves’ portrayal, saying it “opens up well as the drama progresses.”
