On October 2, 2012, Perry and Oprah Winfrey’s Oprah Winfrey Network announced an exclusive multi-year relationship. Based on Perry’s previous success in this area, the relationship was primarily for the purpose of bringing written television to OWN.
Perry has written several scripted series for the network, the most popular of which is The Haves and the Have Nots crime drama. During the 8-year run of The Haves and the Have Nots on OWN, the show was hailed as “one of OWN’s biggest success stories with its weekly dose of soapy fun, filled with the typical betrayals, affairs, and manipulations,”[8] with the show hailed as “one of OWN’s biggest success stories with its weekly dose of soapy fun, filled with the typical betrayals, affairs, and manipulations.”

Emmitt Perry Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Willie Maxine Perry (née Campbell) and carpenter Emmitt Perry Sr.He has three brothers and sisters. Perry famously remarked that his father’s method of dealing with problems was to “knock it out of you.” Perry had attempted suicide to get away from his father’s beatings when he was a child. His mother, unlike his father, took him to church every week, where he felt a sense of sanctuary and contentment. He formally changed his first name from Emmitt to Tyler at the age of 16 in order to distinguish himself from his father.
Perry was motivated to admit for the first time, after seeing the film Precious, that he had been abused by a friend’s mother when he was 10 years old; he had also been assaulted by three men before to this, and later learnt that his own father had molested his buddy.
Perry’s DNA test revealed that Emmitt Sr. was not Perry’s biological father. Perry received a GED despite not finishing high school. While watching an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in his early twenties, he overheard someone discuss how writing may have a sometimes therapeutic effect, allowing the author to work out his or her personal problems. This remark encouraged him to pursue a career as a writer. He began writing letters to himself shortly after, which provided the inspiration for the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed. [ Perry went to Atlanta in 1990, and two years later, I Know I’ve Been Changed was performed for the first time at a community theatre, with the 22-year-old Perry’s $12,000 life savings.
The drama addressed subjects such as child abuse and broken families while including Christian concepts of forgiveness, dignity, and self-worth. The musical was a financial disaster and garnered a “less than fantastic” response at first.
He retooled the play and restaged it in Atlanta, first at the House of Blues, then at the Fox Theatre, in 1998, at the age of 28. Perry proceeded to create new theatrical works, travelling them on the “Chitlin’ Circuit” (now known as the “urban theatre circuit”) and gaining a significant and devoted following among African-American audiences. Forbes stated in 2005 that he had sold “more than $100 million in tickets, $30 million in performance videos, and an estimated $20 million in merchandising,” and that “the 300 live concerts he organises each year average 35,000 people per week.” Perry raised a US$5.5 million budget for his first film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, with the help of ticket sales from his stage plays.
The film went on to gross US$50.6 million domestically and had a 16 percent approval rating on the film review website Rotten Tomatoes. Perry made his directorial debut with his next picture, a remake of Madea’s Family Reunion, and has gone on to helm all of the Madea films thereafter. Madea’s Family Reunion debuted at number one at the box office with $30.3 million on its opening weekend, February 24–26, 2006. The picture made a total of $65 million at the box office. On The Oprah Winfrey Show, Perry and his co-stars promoted the film. Almost all of Madea’s earnings, like Diary’s, have come from the United States.
