T-Pain (born September 30, 1984) is an American rapper, singer, and record producer who goes by the stage name Faheem Rasheed Najm. T-second Pain’s album, Epiphany, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States in 2007. Three Ringz, his third album, was released in 2008. “I’m Sprung,” “I’m ‘n Luv (Wit a Stripper),” “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’),” “Bartender,” “Can’t Believe It,” and “5 O’Clock” were among the albums’ hit singles. T-Pain has two Grammy Awards, one for “Good Life” with Kanye West and the other for “Blame It” with Jamie Foxx.
T-Pain is the founder of the Nappy Boy Entertainment record label, which he founded in 2005. T-Pain popularised the creative use of the Auto-Tune pitch correction effect, which he used with extreme parameter settings to create distinctive vocal sounds throughout his career as a singer. T-Pain was featured on more than 50 chart-topping singles between 2006 and 2010. His most successful feature to date was on Flo Rida’s debut single “Low,” which the Recording Industry Association of America certified diamond (10x platinum) (RIAA).
Aliyah, a Bahamian chef, and Shasheem, the founder of the Homeboyz to Men programme, raised Najm in Tallahassee, Florida. His stage name is an abbreviation for “Tallahassee Pain,” which he chose because of the difficulties he faced while living there. When he was three years old, a family friend, gospel jazz artist/producer Ben Tankard, let him spend time in his studio and “twist the knobs,” he had his first experience of the music business. Najm converted his bedroom into a music studio when he was 10 years old, using a keyboard, a beat machine, and a four-track recorder.
While other record deals were offered to T-Pain, the highest proposal was US$900,000, Akon promised the budding musician a personal mentorship in the industry. T-Pain began singing instead of rapping after being discovered, and his debut album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, was recorded and published on December 6, 2005. The album debuted at number 33 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of 500,000 units. The lead single “I’m Sprung,” which was released in August 2005 and reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and number nine on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, preceded the album. The second song, “I’m N Luv (Wit a Stripper),” was released in December 2005 and charted at number five on the Hot 100and ten on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
T-Pain started working on his second album in mid-2006, now with the Zomba Label Group, Konvict Muzik, and Jive Records. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 171,000 copies in its first week. In the United States, the album has sold 819,000 copies. In February 2007, the album’s lead song “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” featuring Yung Joc was released. The song debuted at number one on both the Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, making it his first to do so.
“Church,” the album’s third and final single, was released in October 2007 but failed to chart in the United States. T-Pain explained his reasoning for calling his second album ‘Epiphany’ to notable UK R&B writer Pete Lewis of the award-winning Blues & Soul in May 2007: “‘A sudden moment of enlightenment or revelation,’ according to one of the two dictionary definitions of epiphany. And the title ‘Epiphany’ represents the realisation that in order to make the finest music possible, I needed to just walk into the studio and be myself, rather than focusing so hard on following other people’s formulas.”
T-Pain was featured on R. Kelly’s “I’m a Flirt” (remix) with T.I., Bow Wow’s “Outta My System,” Fabolous’ “Baby Don’t Go,” DJ Khaled’s “I’m So Hood” alongside many other rappers, Plies’ “Shawty,” Chris Brown’s “Kiss Kiss,” Flo Rida’s “Low,” and Kanye West’ T-Pain was featured on four top ten tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 list in two weeks in late 2007.
“Good Life,” a collaboration with Kanye West, went on to win the BET Award for Best Collaboration and was nominated for several other awards.
The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song in 2008. T-Pain started working on his third album with Rocco Valdes, Akon, and Lil Wayne in 2007. It was also his first album under his Nappy Boy Entertainment banner. Three Ringz, T-third Pain’s studio album, was released on November 11, 2008. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, selling 168,000 copies in its first week. Pr33 Ringz, a mixtape released before the album, was released in early 2008.
