Rodarius Marcell Green, better known by his stage name Rod Wave, is an American rapper and musician who was born on August 27, 1998. He’s noted for his powerful voice and use of R&B and hip hop in his music. Rod’s debut album, Ghetto Gospel (2019), reached number ten on the Billboard 200 in the United States.
“Richer,” which features Polo G, “Street Runner,” and “Tombstone,” the latter of which is his highest-charting song, peaking at number 11 on the Hot 100, are among the album’s highlights. Rod’s professional career began in 2018.
He released his mixtape PTSD on June 14, 2019, which contained the song “Heart on Ice.” The song became a YouTube and TikTok sensation, reaching number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Rod’s debut album, Ghetto Gospel, was released on November 1, 2019, and reached number ten on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Rod’s second album, Pray 4 Love, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 on April 3, 2020, with a deluxe edition following on August 7. Several tracks from the album made the Billboard Hot 100, including “Rags2Riches,” which reached number 12 and became his highest-charting tune. Rod Wave was named to XXL’s 2020 Freshman Class on August 11, 2020.
Rod Wave said in a July 2020 interview that he was working on his third album, which was supposed to be released on August 27, 2020. He unveiled the track list for the album, named ‘SoulFly,’ on March 6, 2021. When SoulFly was released, it was the most-streamed album on YouTube. It was released on March 26th, and the single “Richer” features Polo G as the only guest appearance. His “candour and shrewd ability to tug at listeners’ heartstrings” has been praised. According to Rachel George of ABC News Radio, “music is a direct reflection of Rod’s life, which is why he’s cautious but willing to collaborating with other artists who share his enthusiasm.” Rod grew up listening to E-40, Chingy, Boosie Badazz, Kanye West, and Kevin Gates, who were all included in his song “Calabasas” (who would later be featured in his song “Cuban Links”).
Kevin also assisted in the production of Rod Wave’s album “Ghetto Gospel.” Rod admitted to listening to Ed Sheeran in an interview with The Breakfast Club. During his most recent interview, Rod Wave sang Adele’s “When We Were Young” and discussed Drake.
Rod Wave is one of the most successful hip-hop musicians of the newer age, hailing from Florida and delivering real emotion, anguish, and relatable experiences. Despite growing up in a rough neighbourhood, the 23-year-old musician has chosen a unique approach to his music. Rod explained why he writes such emotional music in a new interview with Montreality, adding that he could easily make a dance song, but he doesn’t want to.
“I could write club music.” I’m capable of producing bangers and nonsense that makes no sense. Rod Wave adds, “I could make that shit all day.” “That would be even easier [than what I’m doing now], but I’m not interested in doing it.” I’m not going to feed anyone any nonsense. I could tell you about pounds, trapping, stealing, robbin’, and killing, I could do all of stuff. It’s just that I’m not interested in doing so. Every day brings a new trapper-rapper. Every day, a new gangster, killer, or murderer emerges. “I’m not going to be in that lane.” Rod also talked about his affection for Adele throughout the interview, breaking out into “When We Were Young” and stating that he used to sing the song to his children when they were smaller, and that they would always stop and listen closely. Rod also discussed why he chose Drake’s “Over My Dead Body” for SoulFly, referring to him as the “GOAT.”
Rod Wave, who is only 21 years old, is rapidly crossing items off his career to-do list. Following the success of his Hunger Games mixtape series in 2017 and 2018, the St. Petersburg, Florida rapper released his debut album, Ghetto Gospel, in 2018. His debut album, released in 2019, debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. He’s since racked up tens of millions of listens, and his viral song “Heart On Ice,” which has earned co-signs from rappers like Meek Mill and 21 Savage, is currently sweeping TikTok by storm. Now, he’s launched Pray 4 Love, his sophomore album, which was released on Friday. Rod tells Complex that the 14-track project took him approximately a month to complete, and he’s already planning the next one.
While he appreciates the success he’s had prior to the album’s release, he claims that making music is about much more than numbers or endorsements. “It’ll be very personal for me,” he says. “Music is a method of expressing yourself. I don’t talk about it much. I never imagined I’d be talking to you on the phone right now. I never expected to be on the tour or for people to be interested in talking about my music. That was never the point. I just wanted to compose music since that’s how I deal with my emotions. I want it to feel like a safe haven for me at all times.” He decided not to rely on outside guest appearances because the music is so personal. He wants to work alone instead. “Making music is a personal experience for me,” Rod says.
On Pray 4 Love, he’s getting a lot of stuff off his chest. Rod says he can’t “pinpoint just one” message, but he hopes listeners leave feeling like they’re in the same boat as him at the end of the project. “What I want people to take away from it is an understanding of how real life is and how you don’t have to be artificial or fake,” he says. “I ain’t cutting any corners with my music.” I’m not biting my tongue for no reason. This is exactly how I feel. This is the actual world. These are real-life scenarios that real individuals face. Rod Wave joined us at home to talk about the making of Pray 4 Love and what’s ahead. Below is the interview, which has been gently modified for clarity.
Rod Wave Biography/Wiki
The only thing it had an impact on were my shows. That’s what I’m truly into: making music, performing shows, and interacting with people. Many individuals are disappointed that we were unable to visit their city. They paid their money to come see us and were ecstatic. Aside from that, not much has changed. I’ve stayed in the house and stayed out of the way. I only wish I had been able to complete my tour.
Some artists have chosen to postpone the release of their albums. I’m not sure why folks thought it needed to be postponed. Everyone is either at home or on their phone because they don’t have enough to do. Delaying the record, in my opinion, would be insane. While everyone is tuned in, you should drop it right now. I’m sure the people require that music.
Since the release of Ghetto Gospel, your popularity has soared, and expectations have risen. Was there any kind of strain on you while you were working on Pray 4 Love? There’s no need to be concerned; there’s no need to feel rushed. I can see why people think that, but there’s no need to be concerned. I’m still the same person I used to be. The same message is given to me on a regular basis. Could you perhaps expound on your message about Pray 4 Love?
There are a lot of messages to find. Although there are several messages regarding how to live with relationships, ranging from dealing with your homeboys to coping with your pain, the album’s tune “Pray 4 Love” functioned as a summation. This is something that we all have to cope with in life. As a result, the entire album, rather than simply one, may convey you a range of messages. The album contains no guest appearances. Was there a specific reason you went down that path?
Not in the least. For me, making music is a really personal process. When I write music, I don’t even go to the studio. It’s just myself and my engineer in a dark room someplace recording. By [connecting] with people or doing other things, I’m not trying to give the wrong message. I’ll back anyone who is creating music in their own special way. I’d rather pursue my own passions. That’s how I’ve been feeling lately.
Would you like to work on future projects with other artists or would you prefer to work alone?
Yes, I have those feelings at times, but there are some people who cause me to have those feelings. They act as though they understand what I’m seeing or the ideas I’m trying to get through. So that may make sense to this or that person, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s purely personal. I don’t give a damn about anyone else. I only think about myself. Because of my lifestyle, I try to concentrate on myself and the path I’m taking. I’m lost in my own universe. That’s how I’d like it to stay.
When you were working on Pray 4 Love, how was the creative environment? To come up with music, I simply put on my headphones and listen to rhythms. My engineer and I then put up a studio in the hotel room, set up the mike, and simply recorded them all a few days later. I’ve never gone into a studio before. I don’t do any producer sessions or anything like that. That is not something I do. It’s just myself and the engineer.
Why did you decide to record in this manner rather than in a typical studio? It would be really personal for me. If I think it’s too personal, I’m not going to drop it. Music is a form of self-expression. I don’t talk about it very often. When I initially started making music, that was all there was to it. I never believed I’d be on the phone with you right now. I never expected to go on tour or for people to be interested in talking about my album. That was never the idea in the first place. I just wanted to compose music since that’s how I express myself. I want it to feel like a secure refuge for me at all times. I don’t want it to become anything else because once it does, everything starts to change. Music will always be a safe haven for me.
