Dick Groat Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

Groat set a record by leading the National League in double plays five times, putouts four times, and assists twice. He finished his career with 1,877 games at shortstop and 1,237 double plays, and he was among the National League’s career leaders in putouts (10th, 3,505), assists (8th, 5,811), and total chances (8th, 5,811). (9th, 9,690).

Groat, who is also a great basketball player, attended Duke University and is a Sigma Chi fraternity member.

He was a guard in the National Basketball Association for one season. Groat became the first individual to be inducted into both the college basketball and college baseball halls of fame in 2011 when he was admitted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. He was the colour commentator for the Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball radio broadcasts from 1969 until 2019.

Branch Rickey, the Pirates’ general manager, signed Groat just days after he graduated from Duke University, where he was a two-time All-American in basketball and baseball. He was also pursued by the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants, but he had always dreamed to play for the Pirates after growing up just a few miles from Forbes Field. He made his major league debut with the Pirates in June, never having played in the minors, and batted.284 for the rest of the season. Following that, he resumed his basketball career before joining the Army for two years. He hit.362 in baseball and averaged 35 points per game in basketball to lead Fort Belvoir teams to worldwide Army championships in both sports, the first time a single base had won both trophies in the same year.

When he returned to the Pirates in 1955, he batted second for the team, and leadoff hitter Bill Virdon later remarked on his special hit-and-run ability. Groat topped the National League in putouts for the first time that year, according to pitcher Roy Face, who noted that while not having tremendous speed or a strong arm, Groat was always in the ideal position for the various hitters. He established the record for most at bats in a season (520) without hitting a home run or stealing a base in 1956. In 1957, he hit.315 (sixth in the league) with a career best of seven home runs, and on September 29 of that year, he threw out the final hitter to end the Giants’ final home game at the Polo Grounds. In 1958, he hit.300 again and led the National League in putouts and double plays, leading the Pirates to a second-place finish, the first time they had finished higher than eighth since 1949. In 1959, he again led the National League in putouts and double plays, and he was named to his first of five All-Star teams. In the next offseason, he was almost traded for Roger Maris, but manager Danny Murtaugh cancelled the transaction.

Groat responded with his best year as team captain, becoming the first Pirate to be chosen MVP since Paul Waner in 1927, and the first right-handed Pirate to win the batting title since Honus Wagner in 1911. After having his wrist broken by a Lew Burdette pitch on September 6, he missed a few weeks late in the season. He tied Game 1 at 1–1 in the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees with a first-inning double and scored to put Pittsburgh ahead; they went on to win 6–4 with Groat turning a double play to close the game. In Game 7, he had an RBI single and scored in the eighth inning, as the Pirates scored five runs to take a 9–7 lead; Mazeroski’s famous home run in the following inning gave the Pirates the Series.

Groat batted.275 in 1961, and he and Mazeroski led the league in double plays. In November 1962, general manager Joe L. Brown transferred him to the Cardinals in exchange for Don Cardwell, in the hopes of improving the team’s pitching. Groat was devastated by the transfer, as he had wanted to become a coach and eventually manager after retiring, and he cut all ties with the team until the 1960 winners reunited in 1990.

He also led the National League with 43 doubles and was third with 11 triples; he finished second in the MVP voting behind Sandy Koufax.
