From the late 1960s to the end of the 1970s, Plant was a huge hit with Led Zeppelin. He built a strong image as a charismatic rock-and-roll front man, comparable to that of Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Who’s Roger Daltrey, Doors’ Jim Morrison, and Queen’s Freddie Mercury. Plant contributed to the creation of the “god of rock and roll” or “rock god” stereotype with his mane of long blond curly hair and muscular, bare-chested demeanour. Plant later collaborated with Jimmy Page on several projects after Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980, including founding the Honeydrippers, a short-lived supergroup with Page and Jeff Beck in 1984. The Honeydrippers: Volume One was their debut album, and they had a No. 3 hit with a remake of Phil Phillips’ “Sea of Love,” as well as a follow-up smash with a rendition of Roy Brown’s “Rockin’ at Midnight.”

Plant has had a successful singing career lasting more than 50 years, thanks to his powerful and wide vocal range (especially obvious in his high-registered vocals). Rolling Stone editors placed him 15th on their list of the 100 greatest vocalists of all time in 2008. Plant was voted the greatest lead singer of all time by Rolling Stone readers in 2011. Plant was crowned the “Greatest Metal Vocalist of All Time” by Hit Parader magazine in 2006. In a poll conducted by Planet Rock in 2009, Plant was selected “the finest voice in rock.”
Robert Anthony Plant was born in the Black Country village of West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, on August 20, 1948, to Robert C.

He grew raised in Halesowen, Worcestershire, in the Hayley Green neighbourhood. Plant expressed his desire to be like Elvis Presley as a ten-year-old in an interview with Andrew Denton on the Denton talk show in 1994: He abandoned his training as a chartered accountant after only two weeks to attend college in an effort to gain more GCE passes and become a part of the English Midlands blues scene. “I left home at 16 and began my real musical education, travelling from group to group, expanding my understanding of the blues and other songs with substance and worth listening to,” he added.

Johnson, Bukka White, Skip James, Jerry Miller, and Sleepy John Estes were among Plant’s early blues inspirations. Plant worked a variety of jobs while pursuing his music career, one of which was putting tarmac on roads for the large British construction company Wimpey in Birmingham in 1967. He also worked for a short time at Woolworth’s in Halesowen town. He recorded three obscure singles for CBS Records and sung with a number of groups, notably the Crawling King Snakes, with whom he met drummer John Bonham. They went on to form the Band of Joy, a band that fused blues with emerging psychedelic influences. After being turned down by his first choice, Terry Reid, who recommended him to a gig at a teacher training college in Birmingham, guitarist Jimmy Page was looking for a lead singer for his new band in 1968.

Robert Plant Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

Plant sung “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane in front of Page, prompting Page to abandon his search. Plant and Page reminisced:

Plant: I was performing at this college when and Jimmy came up to me and asked if I wanted to join the Yardbirds

When I auditioned him and heard him sing, I instantly assumed there was something wrong with his personality or that he was tough to work with, because I couldn’t understand why, after he told me he’d been singing for a few years, he hadn’t yet become a household name. So I invited him over to my apartment for a while to check him out, and we got along swimmingly. There are no issues. Plant and Page formed an instant bond over their mutual love of music, and their writing partnership began with reworkings of earlier blues tunes.
In 1968, the band was christened the “New Yardbirds,” but they quickly became known as Led Zeppelin. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 1969 and is widely credited with launching the heavy metal genre. Plant has said that labelling Zeppelin as heavy metal is unjust because over a third of their songs was acoustic.

Plant and his now-divorced wife Maureen were critically injured in a car accident in Rhodes, Greece, in 1975.

For a few months, this hampered the development of Led Zeppelin’s seventh album Presence, and the band was obliged to cancel the remainder of the year’s tour dates.

While Plant was on tour with Led Zeppelin in the United States in July 1977, his five-year-old son Karac died. For the family, it was a heartbreaking loss. Plant withdrew to his home in the Midlands, where he pondered his destiny for months. Plant didn’t start composing song lyrics with Led Zeppelin until 1969, when they recorded Led Zeppelin II. As Jimmy Page puts it:

Plant’s lyrics with Led Zeppelin were frequently mystical, philosophical, and spiritual, alluding to events in Greek and Norse mythology, such as “Immigrant Song,” which alludes to Valhalla and Viking conquests. The song “No Quarter,” on the other hand, is frequently misinterpreted as referring to the god Thor; the song really alludes to Mount Thor (which is named after the god). “The Rain Song” is another example.

J. R. R. Tolkien, whose book series inspired lyrics in some early Led Zeppelin songs, was also an influence on Plant. Verse references to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit can be found in “The Battle of Evermore,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” “No Quarter,” “Ramble On,”

Plant’s interest in mystical lyrics is also based on Welsh folklore. He grew up near the Welsh border, and summer vacations to Snowdonia were common. Plant purchased a Welsh sheep farm in 1973 and began taking Welsh courses and researching the land’s mythology (such as Black Book of Carmarthen, Book of Taliesin, etc.) Karac, Plant’s first son, was named after Caratacus, a Welsh warrior. The song “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp” is based on the 18th-century Welsh cottage Bron-Yr-Aur, which was owned by a friend of his father and later inspired the song “Bron-Yr-Aur.” Plant’s mystical perspective of the land is reflected in the songs “Misty Mountain Hop,” “That’s the Way,” and early dabblings in what would become “Stairway to Heaven,” all of which were written in Wales. Plant’s early and continuing experiences in Wales, according to critic Steve Turner, laid the groundwork for his broader interest in the mythology he revisits in his lyrics (including those myth systems of Tolkien and the Norse).

Plant was inspired by Page’s love for varied musical experiences to travel to Africa, notably Marrakesh in Morocco, where he met Umm Kulthum:

Initially, the scales and, of course, the vocal work piqued my interest. You could sense the tension in the way she sang, the way she could hold a note, and you could tell that everyone, the entire orchestra, would hold a note until she decided to change it.

During their 1994 reunion album No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, he and Jimmy Page revisited these influences.

Plant drew on these elements frequently throughout his solo career, most notably on the 2002 album Dreamland.

Plant’s contribution to “Stairway to Heaven,” an epic rock song included on Led Zeppelin IV that drew influences from folk, blues, Celtic traditional music, and hard rock, among other genres, was arguably one of his most significant triumphs with Led Zeppelin.

Plant wrote the majority of the song’s lyrics in 1970 at Headley Grange on the spur of the moment. Despite never being issued as a single, the song has been voted the best song of all time in polls.

Plant is particularly known for his lyrical improvisation in Led Zeppelin’s live shows, where he frequently sings lines that have never been heard on studio recordings. Plant’s vocal mimicry of bandmate Jimmy Page’s guitar sounds is one of the most recognised Led Zeppelin musical elements. “How Many More Times,” “Dazed and Confused,” “The Lemon Song,” “You Shook Me,” “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,” and “Sick Again” are examples of this.

He’s also recognised for his on-stage banter, which is lighthearted, amusing, and unconventional. During his gigs, Plant frequently discusses the songs’ origins and backgrounds, as well as making social commentary. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the 2007 Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert with Led Zeppelin, he mentioned artists like Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Blind Willie Johnson, and Willie Dixon as sources of inspiration.

Plant, like his contemporaries Roger Daltrey of the Who, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, Freddie Mercury of Queen, and Jim Morrison of the Doors, had immense success with Led Zeppelin in the 1970s and built a fascinating image as the charismatic rock-and-roll front man. Plant aided in the creation of the “god of rock and roll” or “rock god” stereotype with his mane of long blond hair and muscular, bare-chested demeanour. Plant was known for dancing, hopping, skipping, snapping his fingers, applauding, making expressive motions to emphasise a song or cymbal crash, throwing back his head, or planting his hands on his hips during live performances. He and the other members of Led Zeppelin got more showy on stage as the 1970s progressed, wearing more ornate, colourful attire and jewellery. “Once he had a couple of US tours under his belt, ‘Percy’ Plant immediately gained an astonishing degree of arrogance and swagger that irrefutably increased Led Zeppelin’s rapidly developing popularity,” according to Classic Rock magazine. Plant, during his “Unledded” tour with Jimmy Page in 1994, remarked sarcastically on his Led Zeppelin showmanship.
