Ed Kranepool Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

In 1962, Kranepool received a September call-up in his first professional season after batting.301 at three levels of the Mets’ minor league system. Kranepool was six years younger than the next-youngest Met in 1962, a consequence of Met management’s poor decision to recruit largely older veterans in the expansion draught. In a 9–2 loss to the Chicago Cubs at the Polo Grounds on September 22, 1962, he made his major league debut wearing number 21 as a late-inning defensive replacement for Gil Hodges at first base. In his sole at-bat, he grounded out to Cubs second baseman Ken Hubbs. The next day, September 23, he made his first start at first base, going one for four with a double.

Kranepool opened the 1963 season dividing time between first base and right field with “Marvelous” Marv Throneberry. By May 5, Throneberry’s poor at-bat performance (.143 hitting average and one run batted in in the first 23 games of the season) had worn Met fans and management down, and he was demoted to the Mets’ Triple A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons. Tim Harkness was promoted to first base, while Snider was moved to left field, with Kranepool taking over as the Mets’ everyday right fielder. Kranepool was sent down to the minors in July with a.190 batting average, thus this arrangement did not survive. He returned later that season as a September call-up, and in his first game back, he went four for five with a run batted in and a run scored. Following his late-season call-up, he continued to hit better and raised his batting average to.209 for the season.

With Harkness, Dick Smith, and Frank Thomas sharing first base at the start of the 1964 season, Kranepool spent the majority of his time in right field. Joe Christopher was hitting.303 on May 24 and had secured the starting job in right field. Kranepool was relegated to Buffalo with a.139 batting average after being given the right field assignment.

Kranepool was promoted back to the Mets after only 15 games with the Bisons, where he hit three home runs and batted.352. Kranepool pitched all 18 innings of a double header on his final day with the Bisons before being called to Shea Stadium, where the Mets were playing two games the next day. He started the first game of a double header against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, May 31. In the second game of the doubleheader, Kranepool batted first and went 23 innings. Kranepool ended up playing all 23 innings in the two games, going four for fourteen. In total, he pitched 50 innings over the course of two days. “I wish we could have played another 40 minutes,” Kranepool later said of the nearly 10-hour double header, which ended at 11:20 p.m. “That way, I’d always be able to say I was in a game that began in May and ended in June.”

Kranepool’s batting average rose to.264 after these two games, putting him on a 13-game hitting streak. Kranepool batted.257 this season, with 10 home runs and 45 RBI.

The Mets acquired future Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn from the Milwaukee Braves prior to the start of the 1965 season. Kranepool gave up his number 21, which he had worn his whole career, to Spahn and switched to number 7.

Kranepool was batting.287 at the halfway point of the season, with seven home runs and 37 RBIs. Despite not playing in the 1965 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, he was named the Mets’ sole representative on the National League All-Star squad. Kranepool’s hitting average had dropped to.253 by the end of the season, but it was still enough to lead the Mets, who had lost 112 games and placed ninth and last in the National League. He also had 133 hits and 24 doubles to lead his team.
