Juan Marichal Biography/Wiki
Despite winning more games than any other pitcher in the 1960s, he only pitched in one World Series game, and he was frequently eclipsed in post-season awards by his contemporaries Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson.
Marichal’s delivery was known for having one of the most complete windups in contemporary baseball, with a virtually vertical high kick of his left leg (even more so than Warren Spahn’s). Marichal maintained this delivery throughout his career, and images taken near his retirement reveal only a little reduction in the vertical kick. His windup allowed him to keep the type of pitch a secret until it arrived.
Ramfis Trujillo, the son of late Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, discovered Marichal. The Dominican Air Force Baseball Team (Aviación Dominicana), against whom Marichal pitched a 2–1 victory game in his hometown of Monte Cristi, was sponsored by Ramfis. Marichal was a member of the Aviación Dominicana team from the minute the game concluded, having been enlisted in the Air Force on the spot by Ramfis.
In July 1960, Marichal got promoted to the major leagues for the first time. On July 19, 1960, he became the Dominican Republic’s second native pitcher to reach the major leagues. He made an early impression, pitching a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 19, 1960, only to give up a two-out single to Clay Dalrymple. He finished with a one-hit shutout, one walk, and 12 strikeouts. With a game score of 96, he set the record for the best game score by a pitcher in his Major League debut. He went on to start 10 more games that season, going 6–2 with a 2.66 ERA.
Injuries hampered him in 1961, but he still made 27 starts for the Giants and won 13 games. The Giants and Dodgers were locked in a tight pennant race in 1962. Marichal was out of action from September 5 to 22, due to a sprained ankle, and the Giants lost his final two scheduled starts of the season. The teams were tied at the end of the regular season and faced off in a best-of-three tie-breaker series to decide the league champion. Marichal started Game 3 and stopped the Dodgers to one run until the sixth inning, when Tommy Davis hit a two-run home run to put the Dodgers up 3–2. The Dodgers led 4–2 when Marichal left to start the bottom of the eighth, but San Francisco rallied in the ninth to win the game 6–4.
Beginning in 1962, he appeared in every All-Star game of the decade. With a 6–0 record, a 0.97 ERA, and 42 strikeouts in May 1966, he was voted National League Player of the Month. On July 14, 1967, he gave up Eddie Mathews’ 500th career home run.
Marichal won more than 20 games in every season from 1963 to 1969, save 1967, and never had an ERA higher than 2.76, which historian James S. Hirsch deems “one of the finest pitching performances in history.” In 1963 and 1968, he topped the league with 26 victories each. His 30 complete games led the league and were the most ever pitched by a pitcher in a season. He also finished fifth in MVP voting in 1968, behind Bob Gibson, Pete Rose, Willie McCovey, and Curt Flood, for the first time in his career. He and Sandy Koufax were the only two Major League pitchers in the postwar era (1946–present) to record three seasons of 25 or more victories each.
