Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph (born October 22, 1992) is an English-American rapper better known as 21 Savage. He was born in London and relocated to Atlanta with his mother when he was seven years old.He rose to prominence after releasing the 2015 mixtape The Slaughter Tape, as well as an EP with producer Metro Boomin called Savage Mode (2016), and its popular singles “X” (featuring Future) and “No Heart,” as well as guest appearances on Drake’s 2016 single “Sneakin’” and Post Malone’s 2017 single “Rockstar.”

On February 3, 2019, 21 Savage was apprehended by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Officials confirmed that he was a British citizen who visited the United States in July 2005 and then illegally overstayed his visa when it expired a year later. On February 12, he was given bond and released the next day, pending the outcome of an accelerated deportation hearing.  The hearing was originally planned for April 9, however it was later pushed out indefinitely.

He travelled to the United Kingdom for his uncle’s funeral in June 2005, stayed for a month, and then returned to Atlanta on an H-4 visa on July 22, 2005, which supposedly expired a year later.  21 Savage’s mother then established a relationship with Dr. Amsu Anpu, a British expatriate and endocrinologist, with whom she produced more children. Quantivayus (“Tay-Man”), his brother, was killed in a shooting following an attempted narcotics deal.

21 Savage was permanently barred from all DeKalb County School District campuses in the seventh grade for possessing a firearm.As a result, he began attending schools in the Atlanta metropolitan area before being sent to a juvenile correctional institution.

After being released from the juvenile detention centre, he completed eighth grade through an alternative programme before completing a semester of high school, but dropped out in his first year due to several exclusions that he described as “exhausting.”

After abandoning out, he joined a small street gang that was part of the larger Bloods group and became a full-time drug dealer, primarily dealing cannabis. He reportedly engaged in other criminal activities such as robbery and car theft on a regular basis, yet he was only detained once when contraband was discovered in a car he was driving. Larry, his “right-hand man,” was slain in a firefight in 2011, when he was 19 years old.

On his 21st birthday in 2013, 21 Savage was shot six times by rival gang members during an attempted heist, and his best friend Johnny was slain. 21 Savage began rapping after the loss of a friend in a gunfight on his 21st birthday.  His music career was initially supported by the uncle of a deceased friend, who offered him money for studio time in 2013.  On November 12, 2014, DJ Plugg released 21 Savage’s debut track, “Picky.” It was later included on The Slaughter Tape, his debut mixtape, which was released on May 25, 2015. As a result of the release, he became a “underground hero in Atlanta,” according to Interview Magazine.

Later same month, he also appeared on SahBabii’s single “Outstanding.” On March 21, 2018, he was featured on BlocBoy JB’s Simi mixtape’s tune “Rover 2.0.”  The following month, he appeared on Ty Dolla Sign’s “Clout,” which was included in the deluxe edition of his album Beach House 3. On October 31, 2018, 21 Savage shared a photo on Instagram showing a man in shadow jumping in the air away from a massive fire.
