Roshan’s grandfather, Prakash, cast him in the film Aasha (1980) when he was six years old; he danced in a song enacted by Jeetendra for which Prakash paid him 100 rupees.

He appeared in Prakash’s Aas Paas (1981) in the song “Shehar Main Charcha Hai.”His lone speaking role at this time came when he was 12 years old, when he played Govinda, the titular character’s adopted son, in Prakash’s Bhagwaan Dada (1986). Hrithik Roshan Biography/Wiki
He studied acting under Kishore Namit Kapoor while assisting his father. Roshan was supposed to make his feature film debut as a lead actor opposite Preity Zinta in Shekhar Kapur’s Tara Rum Pum Pum, which was later cancelled. Instead, he appeared in his father’s romance play Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), starring Ameesha Patel, another debutante. To prepare, he worked out with actor Salman Khan to bulk up physically, improved on his diction, and took acting, singing, dance, fencing, and riding classes. With 620 million (US$8.2 million) in global revenue, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai became the highest-grossing Indian film of 2000.
Critics praised his performance; On Rediff.com, Suggu Kanchana commented, “[Roshan] is excellent. The ease and flair with which he dances, emotes, and fights makes it difficult to believe this is his debut feature… He appears to be the most promising of the recent crop of star sons we’ve seen.” Roshan won Best Male Debut and Best Actor awards for the performance at the annual Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, and Zee Cine Awards.
He was the first actor to receive both the Filmfare Best Debut and Best Actor honours in the same year. The film launched Roshan’s career as a leading performer in Bollywood. Following his meteoric popularity, the actor found life difficult, particularly the demands on his time. Roshan played Amaan, an innocent Muslim youngster who becomes a terrorist following the 1992–93 Bombay riots, in Khalid Mohammed’s crime drama Fiza, his second release. Roshan appeared in the film to broaden his acting horizons. Fiza, which starred Karisma Kapoor and Jaya Bachchan, was a modestly successful box office hit, and Roshan’s performance earned him a second nomination for Best Actor at the Filmfare Awards.
Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama lauded him as the production’s most valuable asset, praising his “body language, diction, expressions, [and] whole demeanour.” Roshan then starred alongside Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta, and Jackie Shroff in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s action movie Mission Kashmir (2000). The film, set in the Kashmir valley during the Indo-Pakistani hostilities, addressed the issues of terrorism and crime and was a financial success. Roshan was lured to his complicated part as a young guy traumatised by the knowledge that his adopted father was responsible for the deaths of his entire birth family. According to Adarsh, Roshan “With his captivating presence, he brightens up the screen. His body language, combined with his expressions, will undoubtedly win him praise.” Hrithik Roshan photographed in 2001. Roshan at a promotional event for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), his most commercially successful film to that date.
Roshan participated in two films in 2001, the first of which was Subhash Ghai’s Yaadein, a love drama in which he co-starred with Kareena Kapoor and reunited with Shroff. Despite being widely anticipated, Yaadein was widely panned by critics; in The Hindu, Ziya Us Salam chastised the director for relying on Roshan’s commercial appeal. Roshan then appeared in Karan Johar’s ensemble melodrama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… with Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Kareena Kapoor. After Johar saw a rough version of Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, he was cast as Rohan Raichand, Bachchan’s younger son who plans to reunite him with his adopted son (played by Khan). Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… was India’s second highest-grossing picture of the year and one of the most successful Bollywood films in the international market, grossing over 1 billion (US$13 million) globally. Anjum N, writing for Rediff.com, referred to Roshan as “the unexpected scene-stealer,” applauding him for holding his own against experienced performers. For his performance, Roshan was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Vikram Bhatt’s romance Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage reunited him with Ameesha Patel in 2002, but it bombed at the box office, as did Arjun Sablok’s romance Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002).
Roshan’s final role that year was in Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, a Yash Raj Films film co-starring Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor. The love drama was widely marketed prior to its premiere and grossed money overseas, but not in India. Roshan appeared in another commercial flop, Sooraj R. Barjatya’s Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, opposite Kareena Kapoor for the fourth time and Abhishek Bachchan. The press dubbed Roshan a “one-trick pony,” implying that the failure of these films would be the end of his career.
Roshan’s career began to take off after he starred in Koi… Mil Gaya (2003). His father directed and produced the film, which revolves on his character Rohit Mehra, a developmentally handicapped young man who meets an extraterrestrial being—a role that required him to lose over 8 kg (18 lb). Roshan remembers his time as a celebrity in the film fondly: “I could relive my childhood. I was free to consume as many chocolates as I pleased. I became a baby, and everyone was extremely kind to me.” Carolyn Jess-book Cooke’s Film Sequels drew parallels between the character and Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks in the same film, although Roshan denied this idea. Picture critics were divided on the film, with some adversely comparing its plot to the 1982 Hollywood release E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but unequivocal in their praise for Roshan. Filmfare observed in a 2010 assessment of the Top 80 Iconic Bollywood Performances: “How human Hrithik’s performance is. Simply because he believes he is cast in the role.
Take note of his subtle turn as you see him laugh, weep, or interact with his remote-controlled alien friend.”According to a Rediff.com critic, Roshan was “the turbojet that takes the film to the world of the spectacular.” Koi… Mil Gaya was the most successful Bollywood film of the year, grossing $800 million (US$11 million), and Roshan won both Filmfare Awards for Best Actor and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Critics).
“I’m grateful I have the intelligence to realise what’s going on with me. If I allow myself to be influenced by all of this hoopla, I will hinder my progress as an actor and be doomed for the rest of my life. I know I have a long way to go before I can even hope to match the accomplishments of any of the superstars. I know I’m decent at my profession, and I’m sure I’ll be great one day, but I also know how horrible I can be right now.”
