John Tudor Biography/Wiki
Tudor began his college baseball career as the team’s best pitcher and hitter at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts.
Tudor addressed a letter to Georgia Southern University after two years at North Shore, requesting the opportunity to walk on to their baseball team. Tudor was able to earn a spot on the Eagles’ roster as the fifth starting pitcher.
He played collegiate summer baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Falmouth Commodores in 1975. Tudor was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the third round (secondary phase) of the 1976 MLB draught from Georgia Southern.
Tudor is the oldest of three children born to engineer Jean Tudor and her mother, Melton Tudor.
Tudor, despite being born in New York’s Capital District, grew up in Peabody, Massachusetts, and attended Peabody High School, where he played hockey and was once cut from the baseball team.
Tudor made his major league debut on August 16, 1979, with the Boston Red Sox. In 1980, he spent time in the minors before being employed as a starter and reliever in 1981. Tudor collected his only save of his major league career on September 9, 1981, when he retired the only batter he faced in the 11th inning of a 6-5 Red Sox victory over the Tigers.
Tudor eventually cemented his place in the rotation in 1982, going 13-10 with a 3.63 ERA. Tudor was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for designated hitter Mike Easler after the team finished 13-12 the following season. He was traded to St. Louis in exchange for veteran outfielder George Hendrick after a year in Pittsburgh, where he finished 12-11 with a 3.27 ERA. In exchange for catcher Brian Harper, the Pirates obtained a career minor leaguer and transferred him to the Cardinals.
Tudor was never able to repeat his 1985 supremacy. He never won more than 13 games despite having low ERAs. He participated in the World Series again in 1987, but this time he lost with a chance to win it. Tudor’s playing time was curtailed after 1985 due to injuries, which eventually ended his career. In 1987, Tudor was injured in a bizarre accident when Mets catcher Barry Lyons went into the Cardinals’ dugout to collect a foul ball and collided with Tudor, fracturing his leg.
Tudor was traded to the Dodgers in 1988, despite having the top ERA in the league. He pitched well again in the 1988 World Series, winning his sole World Series ring, but sustaining a significant elbow injury during the postseason. Tudor missed practically all of 1989 due to the injury, and despite a strong return season (12-4, 2.40 ERA) in 1990, he retired.
