Although the team’s administrative offices are situated in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri, its clubhouse and practice facilities are located in Kansas City and are close to Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. The team participates in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference, having moved back to the Western Conference in 2015 after spending 10 seasons in the Eastern Conference.

Sporting KC first appeared on the field in 1996 as a founder member of the league, which was then known as the Kansas City Wiz. A year later, in 1995, Lamar Hunt created the squad. Since relocating over the state line, they have held the distinction of being the only major professional sports league club to have their home games in the state of Kansas.

Lamar Hunt, who was also the creator of the American Football League, the Kansas City Chiefs, the United Soccer Association, and Major League Soccer, was the driving force behind the establishment of the Kansas City MLS club. KC Wiz made their debut on April 13, 1996, beating the Colorado Rapids by a score of 3–0 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Preki, Mo Johnston, and Digital Takawira were among the Wiz players that competed under the direction of Ron Newman.

After finishing third in the Western Conference with a 17–15 record during the 1996 regular season, the club earned a spot in the first-ever Major League Soccer Playoffs. In the 1996 conference semi-finals, the Wiz defeated the Dallas Burn in three games, winning the last game in a shootout, before falling to the LA Galaxy in the conference final.

In response to legal action brought by electronics shop The Wiz, the Wiz changed their name to the “Wizards” after the conclusion of the 1996 season. In the 1997 Major League Soccer season, they finished with a 21–11 record, good enough to win the Western Conference regular-season title. Preki was awarded the MLS MVP in 1997. The Washington Wizards were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by the last-seeded Colorado Rapids.

The Wizards had losing records in both the 1998 and 1999 seasons, and they finished last in the Western Conference in each of those campaigns. After firing Ron Newman early in the 1999 season and bringing in Bob Gansler to replace him, the Wizards were a disappointment.

The Wizards began the 2000 season with a 12-game winning run, marking Bob Gansler’s first full season in charge of the franchise. Goalkeeper Tony Meola set an MLS record with a 681-minute scoreless streak and 16 shutouts, and he was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and MLS MVP for his efforts. Peter Vermes was selected as the Major League Soccer Defender of the Year in 2000. The Wizards concluded the regular season with a 16–7–9 record, the best in the league, and won the Major League Soccer Supporters’ Shield.

KC opened the 2012 season with seven straight victories, establishing an MLS record by going 335 minutes without surrendering a shot on goal. KC finished the season with seven consecutive victories. The club ended the regular season with an 18–7–9 record, good for first place in the East. Graham Zusi, who had a league-high 15 assists and was a finalist for the 2012 MLS MVP award, Jimmy Nielsen, who had a league-high 15 shutouts and was named 2012 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, and Matt Besler, who was named 2012 MLS Defender of the Year, were the team’s standout performers.

In the conference semifinals, Sporting KC fell to the Houston Dynamo. After winning 2012 the United States Open Cup and beating Seattle Sounders FC in the final, Sporting KC earned a spot in the 2013–14 CONCACAF Champions League.

In an announcement made on October 27, 2014, the league said that Sporting KC and the Houston Dynamo will be transferred from the Eastern Conference to the Western Conference when two new clubs from the East Coast, New York City FC and Orlando City SC, joined the league in 2015. Sporting finished sixth in the Western Conference that season, and as a result of the increased twelve-team field in the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, the club qualified for playoff action once again. A penalty shootout resulted in a 6–7 victory for the Portland Timbers against them in the Western Knockout Round of the MLS Playoffs.

Later in the month, the club moved Dom Dwyer to Orlando City in return for $1.6 million, breaking the previous record for the most costly internal deal in league history, which stood at $2 million.

The squad won the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after beating the New York Red Bulls in the championship match, 2–1 in overtime. Sporting won their fourth Open Cup trophy, and they’re third in the past six years, as a result of the victory.

With the win, head coach Peter Vermes improved his record in cup finals and championship games with the club to 4–0 in those competitions. In the history of the Open Cup, Kansas City became just the second club in the single-elimination competition to win four Open Cup finals in the same number of appearances, joining the Chicago Blackhawks.
