Located in Los Angeles, California, the Los Angeles Football Club is a professional soccer team that is a member of the Western Conference in Major League Soccer. The squad was officially established on October 30th, 2014. The Banc of California Stadium is where the team’s home games are being held. The squad shares the Los Angeles market with the Los Angeles Galaxy, which is a soccer team. The two clubs engage in a rivalry known as El Tráfico, which means “the traffic.”
LAFC hired Bob Bradley, a former coach of the United States Men’s National Team, as their head coach in July 2017, and they signed Carlos Vela as their first official player on August 11, 2017. Diego Rossi scored the team’s first-ever goal in their Major League Soccer debut against the Seattle Sounders on March 4, 2018, in a game that they went on to win 1-0.
The Los Angeles Football Club’s first-ever victory at their home stadium occurred against the Seattle Sounders on April 29, 2018, a 1-0 triumph. Afterward, they would go on an eighteen-game undefeated streak at home until falling 2-0 to Sporting Kansas City at home. Last season, LAFC finished third in the Western Conference and fifth overall in their maiden year. Only the sixth expansion club in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS) has qualified for the postseason in their debut season.
They advanced to the knockout stage of the Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs but were defeated 3-2 by Real Salt Lake. Their performance in the U.S. Open Cup was far better, as they advanced to the semi-finals before losing on penalties to eventual champions Houston Dynamo. LAFC advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Fresno FC, Sacramento Republic, and Portland Timbers on their way there.
Benn Feilhaber, a midfielder, made the most appearances for the team in their first season, with 39. Carlos Vela was LAFC’s leading goal scorer in Major League Soccer with 15 goals, while Diego Rossi was the club’s leading goal scorer overall with 17 goals. LAFC’s second season was more successful than the first, as they finished first overall and won their first-ever trophy, the Supporters’ Shield, to cap off an impressive campaign.
They have now qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League in 2020 as well. Their MLS Cup Conference Semi-Final matchup against the Los Angeles Derby (El Tráfico) was a 5-3 victory for them. In the Conference Final, though, they were defeated 3-1 by the Seattle Sounders of the MLS. LAFC qualified for the U.S. Open Cup in the fourth round but did not go as far as they had the year before, according to the league.
They defeated Real Salt Lake in the fourth round and the San Jose Earthquakes in the Round of 16 but were defeated by the Portland Timbers in the quarter-finals of the MLS Cup. Having scored 38 goals this season, Carlos Vela has more than quadrupled his goal total from the previous season, making him LAFC’s leading goal scorer for the 2019 season.
They also broke other marks throughout the season, including the most points scored, the highest goal differential, the earliest team to qualify for the playoffs, and the most shots fired. They also matched for the most goals scored and the fewest number of losses in the league’s history. For the first time in MLS history, Carlos Vela set three new records: the most goals scored, the most assists, and the most goals scored by a Mexican player in an MLS career.
As a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the third and current season of Los Angeles FC has been temporarily postponed. However, they were able to play two games in the Major League Soccer (MLS) before the delay, winning one and drawing the other. LAFC defeated Inter Miami CF 1-0 in their first match, before drawing 3-3 with Philadelphia Union in their second match.
They also managed to go to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, which they won. In the end, they defeated Mexican team León 3-2 on aggregate after losing the first leg 2-0 but winning the second leg 3-0 in the second leg. Cruz Azul, a Liga MX team, was slated to face them the next day. Vela was once again in the driver’s seat in terms of goals scored, this time with four in four games.
The El Tráfico derby, commonly known as the Los Angeles Derby, is a football match between the Los Angeles Galaxy and El Tráfico. The first match between the two teams took place on March 31, 2018, and concluded in a 4-3 victory for LA Galaxy. After 60 minutes, LAFC had a 3-0 lead, but two goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovi, who was making his debut, guided Galaxy to their first win in this rivalry.
Since this match, there have been three stalemate results (2-2, 1-1 & 3-3). The Los Angeles Galaxy have also claimed another victory in this derby, this time by a score of 3-2 in 2019. Los Angeles FC has only earned one victory in this series so far, and that came in the most recent matchup, which they won 5-3. Ibrahimovi and Vela are the league’s leading goal scorers, with nine goals apiece to their credit.
LAFC Youth Academy is a youth soccer development program. The Los Angeles Football Club Youth Academy was established on February 1, 2016. Initially, they had one fully-funded U-12 USSDA academy squad to get things started. Since then, they have grown to include five teams ranging in age from U12 to U17. The Los Angeles Football Club U13s won the CONCACAF Champions League on August 21st, 2018.
In addition to participating in humanitarian activities, players from the academy also promote the love of the game by offering chances to youngsters and organizations around the city.
