This was the most humiliating defeat ever suffered by an expansion team making their debut. At the time of this writing, no MLS expansion club has ever lost by more than two goals in their first game. However, history was achieved when Christian Ramirez scored the first-ever goal for the club. Following that, Minnesota hosted Atlanta United FC in their home opener at TCF Bank Stadium in snowfall, with the temperature at start reaching 19 degrees Fahrenheit, the lowest temperature ever recorded at kickoff in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

The Loons would lose 6-1, and the records for the newly formed Major League Soccer franchise would continue to pile up. To assist strengthen the midfield, Minnesota would also sign Ethan Finlay from the Columbus Crew SC. They would finish eighth in the Western Conference if they made the playoffs. The year 2018 got off to a rocky start, and not in a good manner.

Kevin Molino and Ethan Finlay would both suffer season-ending knee injuries early in the season, putting Minnesota’s season on hold. Just days before losing Finlay, the team signed Darwin Quintero from Liga MX’s Club America, who became the club’s first Designated Player. Quintero would ultimately become the team’s leading scorer (11) and assist provider (12). (15). Quintero scored three goals in a home encounter against Toronto FC on July 4, 2018, marking the first time in the club’s history that a hat-trick was scored.

The team would go on to sign Angelo Rodriguez, who would become the club’s second designated player in the club’s illustrious history. At TCF Bank Stadium, Minnesota averaged roughly 24,000 spectators per game during its second season in the league, including hosting more than 52,000 people in their last home game at the time, which was the team’s temporary home.

The Loons had a much stronger season in 2019. They made more changes to the squad, including the signing of Jan Gregus, who would serve as the club’s third designated player. Apart from that, they signed Ike Opara, the 2017 MLS Defender of the Year, Osvaldo Alonso, a former Seattle Sounder who played for them for many years, Ligue 2 defender Romain Metanire, and goalkeeper Vito Mannone on loan from Reading F.C.

The Loons spent their first five games on the road before playing their first home game at Allianz Field, a 3-3 draw against New York City FC, to start the season. Minnesota went on to compile a 10-6-2 record at home while going 5-2-0 on the road, including a 2-0 victory against Los Angeles FC to make a statement win in their first season. Furthermore, Minnesota United FC had a good season in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the final against Atlanta United FC, which they ultimately lost 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

They finished fourth in the Western Conference, earning them a berth in the Leagues Cup for the 2020 season in the process. Minnesota would go on to lose to the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs presented by Audi, falling 2-1. The Minnesota Legislature approved a law in 2012 for a new stadium project that is scheduled to open in 2016. The measure included a provision enabling the Vikings to pursue a Major League Soccer franchise and play MLS matches at the stadium. Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges came out in support of the Wilfs.

Minnesota senator Tom Bakk, on the other hand, reached out to Don Garber and the Major League Soccer to tell the league that the state government would not be contributing financially to the construction of a soccer-specific stadium. Garber indicated that, wherever feasible, they wanted an outdoor stadium with a capacity of at least 20,000 seats and where the games were played on grass rather than turf, such as the TCF Bank Stadium.

Allianz Field was officially established in the spring of 2019. Minnesota has a distinct cultural identity. The team’s mascot is a loon, known as PK. In North America and Northern Eurasia, loons are a group of water birds that may be found in large numbers. They’re around the size of a big duck or a small goose in terms of physical size. Since the middle of 2014, PK has served as the public face of MNUFC.

The Dark Clouds and True North Elite are the two primary fan organizations for Minnesota United, with a number of smaller groups such as the Red Loons and Dark Glitterati supporting the team as well. The MNWonderwall is comprised of these organizations. In 2019, they formed THUNDERWALL, a drumming group that contributes to the rhythm and loudness of the shouts heard in the Wonderwall supporter section during home games. Minnesota United FC supporters get together in unison at the conclusion of every home win to sing the popular song Wonderwall by Oasis.

The loon, which is the state bird of Minnesota, is shown on the emblem in stylized form. The loon is adorned with eleven spread feathers, which symbolise the eleven players on the field of play. Minnesota’s team colors are sky blue, grey, and black, with a red accent, and they play in the American Hockey League. The Mississippi River is represented by the blue line that runs over the team’s crest, while the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, often known as the Twin Cities, are represented by the white lines that run across the blue line. The grey color palette depicts Minnesota’s Iron Range, while the upward pointed crest and North Star were inspired by the state motto, L’Etoile du Nord, which means “North Star.”
