The Philadelphia Union is a professional soccer club headquartered in Chester, Pennsylvania, that represents the United States. The Union is a member club of the Major League Soccer (MLSEastern )’s Conference and participates in the division’s premier soccer league. The club entered the league as an expansion team in 2010 and has been competing since.

The club’s home games are held in Talen Energy Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium situated on the banks of the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania. Talen Energy Stadium was built specifically for the team. Coach Jim Curtin oversees the Union’s operations. The Union finished as runners-up in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

In the 2014 edition, they were defeated by the Seattle Sounders FC 3–1 in extra time, and in the 2015 version, they were defeated by Sporting Kansas City 6–7 on penalties after a 1–1 draw. In spite of the fact that it is one of the country’s ten biggest metropolitan regions and has a top-five media market, the Philadelphia area was not represented when Major League Soccer began in 1996.

It was in 2001 when a group of investors sought to establish a Major League Soccer franchise in Trenton, New Jersey, marking the beginning of the endeavor to introduce soccer to the Delaware Valley. Among their goals was the development of a $31 million soccer-specific stadium across the street from the CURE Insurance Arena and with connectivity to the NJ Transit River Line, which was still in the planning stages.

If the Trenton Major League Soccer franchise were to be formed, the squad would be known as “Union FC.” The MetroStars, on the other hand, had the power to deny a franchise to Trenton since it would violate their 75-mile competition-free zone. They exercised that prerogative. Plans to build a 20,000-capacity stadium on the campus of Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, were finalized five years after the project was announced.

The stadium would serve as the home field for both an MLS expansion team and Rowan University’s football team, according to the university. Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey ultimately decided not to provide $100 million in state bonds to support the stadium and several other renovations on the Rowan campus, citing budgetary concerns. Shortly after the Rowan idea was shelved, Keystone Sports & Entertainment investigated the possibility of developing a soccer-specific stadium under the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester.

The Union selected three players in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, the most notable of them being Zac MacMath, who was selected fifth overall in the draught. On January 11, 2011, the Union announced the addition of Bimbo Bakeries USA as a shirt sponsor. Two new players were added on January 20: Colombian goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón and Colombian midfielder Carlos Valdés (D).

Mondragón had just returned from a season with 1. FC Köln in the German Bundesliga, and he has at least 50 appearances for the Colombian national team to his credit. Valdés came to Philadelphia from Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia’s First Division, where he had previously served as captain before joining the Flyers. During the summer transfer window, the Union also acquired the services of US international Freddy Adu.

As part of the 2016 expansion draught, the Union acquired Chris Pontius from D.C. United, Surinamese midfielder Roland Alberg, and Brazilian right midfielder Ilsinho from DC United. During the summer transfer window, they would also sign Alejandro Bedoya, the United States international. A number of significant players from the 2016 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, including Josh Yaro, Keegan Rosenberry, and Fabian Herbers, would join the Union as well.

Goalkeeper Andre Blake had a successful season in 2016, and he went on to earn the 2016 Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year Award. However, the Union went 0–5–2 (W-L-T) in the last seven games of the regular season, putting them out of contention for the postseason. The Union would nevertheless qualify for the playoffs for just the second time in the club’s history, defeating the New England Revolution on goal differential in the process. The Union was defeated 3–1 by Toronto FC in the Knockout Round of the 2016 Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs.

The Union was unable to capitalize on their 2016 success, ending with the same record but failing to qualify for the playoffs in the following season. Despite the fact that the team failed to qualify for the playoffs, Curtin has been confirmed to maintain his role as head coach for the 2018 season.

The Union’s Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner, stated ahead of the 2019 season that Curtin will be retained for the following season on a one-year contract extension, effective immediately. By July of that season, the Union had risen to the first position in the Eastern Conference and had had the finest start to a season in the club’s history. As a result of his performance, the club announced that Curtin had signed a two-year contract extension, allowing him to continue as head coach until the 2021 season.

The Union had its most successful season to date in 2020, and it was the most successful season to date. However, despite the COVID-19 pandemic-related setbacks, the Union made it as far as the semi-finals of the MLS is Back Tournament and went on to win their first trophy by finishing first in the league and collecting the 2020 Supporters’ Shield.

Curtin received his first Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year Award as a result of the team’s success during the season. Winning the Supporter’s Shield qualified the Union for their first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League, where they recorded their first international victory over Deportivo Saprissa, marking Curtin’s 100th victory as the club’s head coach.
