The Colorado Rapids are a professional soccer team in the United States of America situated in the Denver metropolitan region. The Rapids are a part of Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Western Conference. Founded in 1995, the team is a founding member of Major League Soccer, having competed in their first season in 1996. The Rapids are owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and many other sports franchises outside of Colorado.

The Colorado Rapids were one of Major League Soccer’s ten founding teams, owned and controlled by the Anschutz Corporation. Colorado’s initial 1996 season was forgettable. Despite the presence of veteran players such as Shaun Bartlett, Chris Henderson, Chris Woods, Roy Wegerle, and Marcelo Balboa, as well as head coach Bob Houghton, the squad finished last in the Western Conference with the league’s poorest record. Balboa became the club’s first player to score and also the first to score at Mile High Stadium.

Glenn Myernick was appointed as the new head coach and Dan Counce was hired as general manager for the next season. Myernick and Counce bolstered the roster with the additions of Paul Bravo, Wolde Harris, Ross Paule, and goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann. The club initially struggled but recovered to earn a postseason berth. The Rapids upset two opponents en route to the 1997 MLS Cup final. In the 87th minute of the Western Conference final, Chris Henderson scored a mid-air volley past Dallas goalkeeper Mark Dodd, earning Colorado’s berth in the MLS Cup final.

Two of the most notable occurrences in Rapids history occurred during the 2000 season. The first was Marcelo Balboa’s renowned bicycle kick, which earned him the Goal of the Year award. The second was sealing a playoff berth against the Los Angeles Galaxy in the season finale, with Paul Bravo scoring in the 97th minute.

Tim Hankinson was named Colorado’s new head coach in 2001. John Spencer, a Scottish striker, also joined the team that year. While Hankinson brought in competent players like Mark Chung, Chris Henderson, Carlos Valderrama, and Joe Cannon—and the team consistently reached the playoffs—he also recruited a lot of costly and ineffective players such as Zizi Roberts and Darryl Powell. The club also traded away club great Marcelo Balboa during his coaching tenure, who would play one game for MetroStars before retiring.

Chris Henderson made history by being the first player to score in the brand-new stadium. Mark Chung set season records, while Mastroeni starred for the United States Men’s National Team at that year’s World Cup. The team went to the MLS Cup Playoffs Semifinals, and despite missing out on the MLS Cup, the Rapids swept the MLS postseason accolades. General Manager Dan Counce was selected Major League Soccer’s Executive of the Year, while four other Rapids front office staff members were recognized as the league’s finest in their respective roles that year.

Mark Chung was chosen to the MLS All-Star XI and also received the MLS Fair Play Award. Finally, the Rapids ticket sales department was voted the league’s finest after the Rapids finished first in MLS average home attendance for the first time in franchise history, averaging over 20,000 spectators per game.

When Jeff Plush was designated Managing Director of the club in January 2006, he assumed responsibility for the club’s commercial operations. The club’s colors were changed to burgundy and blue in order to “blend” with other Kroenke Sports Enterprise-owned teams. This was done in conjunction with the establishment of a state-of-the-art soccer stadium and fields complex, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, as well as the formation of connections with Arsenal.

The Rapids added Benny Feilhaber, Kei Kamara, Diego Rubio, and Keegan Rosenberry to their squad in 2019. Jonathan Lewis, Matt Hundley, Sam Raben, and Andre Shinyashiki were also added to the squad. The Rapids parted company with Sheklzen Gashi during the preseason. The Rapids released Hudson after going winless in their first nine games.

The Rapids made many changes ahead of 2020, including trading for Auston Trusty and obtaining Lalas Abubakar on a permanent basis. The Rapids began 2020 with two victories before Major League Soccer suspended the season in early March due to COVID-19. Colorado was grouped alongside Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City, and Minnesota United FC in Group D of the MLS is Back Tournament.

Colorado began the MLS regular season in August with three points from four games. Sam Vines, a Rapids Homegrown defender, and Cole Bassett, a Rapids Homegrown midfielder, both had standout seasons. Vines appeared in every match during the regular season, while Bassett led the club with five goals and five assists. Both were chosen to the MLS 22 Under 22 team for the second year in a row.
